Hurney is "the worst GM in the NFL"

Hurney and Gettleman both made mistakes that probably cost us Super Bowl victories. I think there is a good chance that Hurney learned from his mistakes. He has certainly made at least 2 very good moves since he has been back this time. I am willing to give him a shot (with a short leash).

How did Hurney cause John Kasey to kickoff out of bounds on the last drive and give New England just enough time to kick that last field goal?

Did Gettlemen fail to adjust the offense when Wade Phillips kept blitzing every single down to get to Cam?

they both have good things they did, and both suck things they did, but I don’t see how they “cost us” those Superbowls.

kept us from being more competitive and less up and down from not fielding good talent, and from keeping idiot coaches—

yeh that’s their faults

So since Shula is gone, it's Hurney at the top of the blame chart?  Good to know.

It was Hurney before Shula and unfortunately it’s Hurney after Shula.

Hes like that turd that just won’t release no matter how much you clinch or wiggle.

It's a turd that just won't flush.  But point taken.

I second this motion.

I agree there but still good qbs have been drafted in the later rounds thats all I was trying to say.

A good football player can come from any round actually.  The lucky part is finding one.  But luck will only get you so far...

He’s talked a lot about how he’s learned his lesson. I expect this off-season to be much improved.

Don't expect many folks here to take a wait and see attitude about Hurney 2.0 versus 1.0 before making up their mind. Critics will ignore that he admitted he was too loyal and emotional the first time around. He says he has learned and reports from reporters talking to insiders is that he appears to be taking a more analytic and objective job. Something he learned watching Gettleman. Hopefully he isn't copying the hubris and godfather attitude.

The consensus is the coaches and front office are always at fault. Even when things work out it was lucky or the players made them look good. I agree I think actually this could be fun if we don't get bogged down with all the distractions.

A lot of people use that to say "what excellent drafting to get such talent in a low round".

Bulls--t. They were just following their draft boards and got lucky.

As one GM who drafted a low round stud once said "If I were really a genius, I would have drafted him in the first round."

Ones thing is for certain, Jerry's way produced an average team with zero titles.  Let's hope the next guy has a better plan.

If only Hurney had the benefit of the cap rising so rapidly as Gettleman did. It actually went down a couple of years while he was tasked with resigning some of the franchises biggest players.

wow that makes sense considering all 31 other franchises in the league made their teams utterly uncompetitive in that timeframe too.  it's so clear now.

And remember John Fox had no idea we were picking Clausen.  I mean how TF can you not know and be the head coach?  Hurney is garbage.

I actually don't think that Hurney knew he was drafting.  He was on the board.  He's pretty good.  We need a QB.  What a value.   The rest is history.   The truth is that we were desperate for a QB.  It obviously didn't work out but it did lead to us landing Cam in the next draft.

Hurney claim to fame will be first round picks.  After that he basically sucks.

These all Hurney's picks from 2002-2012 out of 89 picks 40 were C or above while the other 49 were D's and F's.  There might a couple you could argue up or down a spot.  These are my grades based on how long they stayed with Carolina or excelled elsewhere.

2006 was his best year and sadly 2011after Cam he shyt the bed and was his worst.  He was atrocious in round two and with wide receivers.

Gettleman's picks are a bit harder to grade since some have been on IR and are still with the team so the staff see potential.  These could change drastically in the next couple of years.

Hurney did better in Round One but overall Gettleman picks are better.

These all Gettleman's picks from 2013-2017 out of 28 picks 24 were C or above while the other 4 were D's and F's.  There might a couple you could argue up or down a spot.  Once again these are much harder to grade because unlike Hurney picks most of these guys are still on the team or still in the NFL. I think most will blow up over Benwikere's C but considering he was a 5th rounder Gettleman didn't do to bad with him.  Started out good but really flamed out later on.  I am not sure if he is with any team now.

2017 was his best year and 2016 ws his worst.

This list is copied of the Panthers.com History page.

OVERALL GRADES FOR 28 PICKS FROM 2013-2017

A - 9 =  32.1% (2 OF THESE 1ST ROUNDERS)

B - 5 = 17.8%

C - 10 = 35.7%

D - 2 = 7.2%

F - 2 = 7.2%
