David Newton Predicts There to Be A Complete Overhaul of the Panthers RB Position Through Draft and Free Agency

Figured this would happen, Turner loves him a power running game and right now we don’t have that guy. CMC would have to pack some muscle on but that could also slow him down. I would go after a FA or possibly draft someone if there’s any quality in this draft

We have 2 options to address this issue, either draft or FA.

Draft:  Nick Chubb or Harris

FA: Crowell or Morris

He lacks top speed and I doubt he is any better than CAP.  Like Michel but really want Rashaad Penny even if he isnt a power back.

He may lack top end but I am looking for a bruising power back. Royce has at least 20lbs on CAP. The guy is built like a brick poo house.

I think it's time to move on from Stew, Whittaker, and Payne. I will accept Stewart on a restructure, but I'd like to see new talent brought in to solidify the position. Stewart still has value as the goal line option, as well as in pass protection. However if he stays a reduced roll is needed IMO.

Many want to keep CAP with us and now a couple of you want to get rid of him now. Go figure.

Well if David Newton thinks it, we can be assured the exact same RB corps will be back next year

In all honestly, I think we have too many holes this offseason to fix RB right now. Maybe a late round flyer or a cheap veteran.

The year after we can draft Stew's replacement

Just read an interesting article . David Newton seems to think that beyond keeping CMC, all of our other RBs could be axed before the start of 2018 season. Says Stews getting old and his performance has been steadily declining, Fozzys skill set is too redundant to CMCs ,  and Artis-Paynes production over the last several seasons has left more to be desired.

Newton went into a bit of a historical dive into how the running game has been really important to almost all of Norv's offensive schemes and that hes featured 9 rushers that finished or who are currently in the top 60 all time rushing yards list . He thinks Norv's going to try to make CMC into the feature back and we will draft someone to complement him.

What do you think about this? Who do you think gets cut before next season? what would you do?

I have no idea if CMC can carry the load or not. But to be fair he had only 3 games where he got 10 or more carries, so he hasnt been given much of a chance to do so. I think it'll be impossible if he doesn't pack on like 10 - 15 lbs of muscle in the offseason , he get taken down too easily to carry the load at this point.

Its possible we could draft a back like Nick Chubb, Royce Freeman , or Josh Adams so they could be the feature back and CMC will be a complimentary back like Sproles was in San Diego if he doesn't add more weight or power to his game.

RB Cap numbers for next season (not counting CMC only in 2nd season next year)

  • Stewart : $5,250,000 (savings if cut : $3,750,000)
  • Artis Payne : $746,563 ($705,000)
  • Fozzy : $1,150,000 (1,150,000)
  • total cap savings cutting all 3 : $5,605,000

Stew and Fozzy should be gone, but $750K for CAP is pretty cheap... Especially since he should have fresh legs.

I could see us using that Kelvin Benjamin third round pick on a back. Stewart could stick around if he's willing to restructure. Fozzy did some good things but we rarely use him.

I liked Cameron Artis Payne but he made some really bad plays against the Falcons and it makes me question if that is why he's gotten so few opportunities.

In any case we could use a running back that's willing to make contact but fast enough to take it long if defenders shy from contact. These guys are plentiful in the 3rd round. Its just a matter of picking the right one.

STEW has probably the best balance of any RB I’ve ever seen play the game and that goes back awhile. The way he keeps his lower part of his body off the ground is astonishing, but the burst to break big runs is gone.

Good enough to ramble for a long TD against Minnesota.

I am not 100% sold that Stewart is done.  Before pulling the plug on Stewart I would like to see him in Pads under Turner's team.

I definitely wouldn't cut him until 1 June.   We can see what the Free Agent Market will give us.

Ok one long run = 5 millon dollars? Love the guy but that contract was the reason Hurney got fired the first time. Got a feeling a lot of fat is gonna be trimmed due to the sell of the team up in the air.
