Bucky Brooks on Why Norv Turner's a brilliant hire for the Panthers

The fact that most of his interceptions come on third down to me is an indictment on him but the team as a whole. Third down is his last chance to stay on the field and the team is often in situations where he has to try to force a 3rd down throw.

I’ve never been a fan of completion percentage or passer rating which can all be inflated by system. They don’t tell you poo about a quarterback.

Exactly. Here's how third down works for us...

Cam runs and puts his body on the line to pick up the first.

Or he has to force throws to receivers that cant get separation and sometimes drop passes that hit them in the chest.

It's a no win situation for cam

Man you can get anybody in here better than Shula when it come to offensive design and those numbers improve. These so called analysts also forget to mention drops, the talent he's throwing to, the offensive line pressure... so many variables, that's why I don't put much in what the numbers say. Yes Cam can improve and can the entire offense.

Yeah, without context it is a truly nebulous stat that can be used for "nefarious" purposes. Yes,  It's criminal how the media looks at Cam sometimes,  and I'm talking from an on-field standpoint.

Pretty tough comments on Cam but one of the most honest and accurate I have seen. We all see and (nervously) joke about "good" Cam and "bad" Cam. If Norv is the guy that can take Cam to another level that will improve O exponentially - even with the current personal.

If Norv can't I seriously doubt anyone will at this stage of Newtons career.  To borrow a line from old Foxy, he is what he is after that.

Cam is bad on third down? That's what happens when you run on first and second and put anyone in third and long over and over.

Something isn't adding up for me here. From what I see the Panthers were 7th in the league at 3rd down conversions % this year which is a bit surprising. Anyway, if Cam was the worst passer on 3rd downs and the Panthers were in 3rd and longs so often (not sure if that is the case or not) how did they have such good success on 3rd downs if they were in obvious passing situations?

Somebody's math is off somewhere.

Pretty sure those are career stats he's looking at.

From what I know, Bucky Brooks is a Newton fan, but you couldn't necessarily tel it from this article.
