No prospect screams "WR1" to me after cursory glance

The 2018 wide receiver class has some prospects,  don't get me wrong,  but from what I've seen thus far,  only Calvin Ridley is a first rounder.  He looks to be the most polished route runner with decent speed.

I know some people have been saying Christian Kirk would be a nice addition,  and he might,  but he's a speed merchant first and foremost. Not saying that he can't master the whole route tree, but open space is where he will probably shine the brightest.

It's early still,  and I haven't looked at any small school prospects,  but I'm thinking that nabbing one of the guys in FA is almost mandatory (and I could almost care less who it is, after looking at the draft class).

If I were being honest,  at this point the guy that most excites me is Parrish Campbell. The thing is though, he is another hybrid that didn't play WR exclusively.

This class is suspect in my opinion. I see second and third round material at best who could of course develop into more, but I don't see day-one starters (or draftees except maybe for Ridley).

Ignoring the outlier season of 2014, rookie WR's rarely contribute much. I'd rather the Panthers work on developing Funchess and Samuel and sign a couple veterans to fill out the WR group.

Unlike WRs, RBs tend to have some of their best seasons as a rookie. A bruising RB to replace Stewart in the first round would be A-OK with me.

And therein lies the conundrum.  This staff needs day one starters as I'm sure they are thinking they don't have time to develop one.   So what do you do?

I'm intrigued by Cortland Sutton. He's got a few inches on Ridley and seems like he may be about the same speed as Ridley (projected 40 of 4.51 vs 4.48 for Ridley). But yeah, if neither Ridley nor Sutton are available at 24, I think you gotta grab someone else in round 1 (maybe a DB) or try to trade up to grab one of the two.

I think if I we're Ron I would have a spy following their wr scout everywhere.

This is a great first step. The next step is hiring/kidnapping the scout.

In all seriousness, WR-needy teams should be backing up the Brinks truck to that scout.

The sooner this organzation sees Funchess and Samuel for what they are and not what they hope to be the better off we’ll be.

A lot of folks are sleeping on unanimous all American James Washington. 3 straight 1,000 yard seasons. Gets good separation although he does not look fast. Uses his body well.

Some scouts think that his teammate has more upside.

From what I see of Ridley, I'd be happy with taking him at 24. He will be a guy who can get open at will and actually have significant separation... Haven't had a guy like that since Smitty.

Problem is I don't think he's lasting until 24. But you never know...

He won't last.  Not even a question in my mind.

    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
