No prospect screams "WR1" to me after cursory glance

it's not like DG ignored the position. he drafted KB, Funchess and Samuel - 3 WRs in the first 2 rounds of the draft. he didn't trade KB.

i was down on funchess but the improvement he has show from day 1 to now is pretty unbelievable. i think he can be a 1000 yard 10 TD guy, which is fantastic in our weak passing offense.

jury is out on samuel, but when he was healthy the way he moved looked special.  i'm excited about what he can become.

i think another WR right around funchess' level would be good enough. i don't think paying a top 10 guy is realistic though.

KB barely finished out his first contract here, and we seemingly begrudgingly picked up his 5th year option. There's no way we can say that we got a good return out of that first rounder.

Funchess was undoubtedly a solid pick. He's still young, and has room for growth, but right now he is a #2. That's just being realistic.

Samuel has potential. But he has to be able to stay on the field to see that potential. Ditto with Byrd. Will they? Hopefully. But I'm done waiting, and hoping receivers will come around. We don't have that luxury with an aging core. It's 2018, we drafted Cam in 2011.

So that leaves us with bottom of the roster PS guys like Bersin and Clay....

I would have to disagree about needing another Funchess. We need a guy with a good combo of speed, dependable hands, and solid route running. Right now none of our WR's consistently fit that bill. Unless we're just content with backing into the playoffs and going one and done, we need to bring in a playmaker.

i didn't mean another funchess in the literal sense, but another WR of comparable value. someone with a different skill-set entirely but would be considered the same caliber player, if that makes sense.

i think we have other needs to fill via FA so i'm not interested in spending the money necessary for a big time guy. we'd have to draft one.

DG didn’t begrudgingly anything— you either pick up or don’t anything like a 5th year.DG wasn’t a lot of things but one thing for sure— deliberate, not affable.

if he waffles on KB then KB would be gone like Smith, Norman and others.

Dave would not have traded KB, and would have pushed to have them both on the field with Byrd running go routes. Solved.

marty Screwed the pooch and Marty wasted that 1st rounder the second he traded KB for a 3rd.

people are nuts. KB still had room to grow and had he stayed with the panthers all year he probably would have crossed 1000 yards again,.. probably 8-10 touchdowns,... again.

If Marty traded Cam Newton today, I wonder how many Benedict Arnolds and Judas would show up kicking and flaming him up the second he’s gone.

its amazing how quickly people turn for or against someone.

You're barking up the wrong tree. Remove your emotion from the equation. I defended KB tooth and nail here, honestly more than anyone else. Spare me the anguish. And I really hope you aren't under the impression that I want Hurney as GM. If so you are very misinformed.

All that aside, if you want the harsh truth, we're really no worse off as an offense without KB. There's a reason we were able to reach the Super Bowl with Ted Ginn. We tried the lumbering slow WR thing, it's time for something else.

Yeh getting only a 3rd for KB was really stupid-- thanks Marty.

Its hard to know what the Browns might do with Gordon.  They have a lot of picks, so they can jump up and move around to get just about anyone they want.

SO they dont have to do anything with Josh.  Ill say this though, if we dont go get him and the Patriots get him for example their 2nd,.......

Oh boy,... I dont need to go there.  If we can get him for a 2nd,.. hes probably better than worrying about Marty hitting on a 2nd rounder--

I could see it,... Marty staring at another Amini,.... calling to him,... we are all like NOOO MARTY(slow cartoon language) DONT DO IT,.. take the tightend or the Corner,... not another Amini,...

But he does it,.. and the Patriots get Josh Gordon,... or Frisco does,.. or ATLANTA does-- OMG could you imagine?

Realistically anything higher than a late 3rd is too much a risk, I’d go as far as a 4th and that’s it, I’d trade our 3rd and 5th for gordon and Cleveland’s 4th(this year or next) but that it since we don’t have a 4th this year

Think about this for a moment as a Panthers fan.

It's 2018, Steve Smith has been gone for 5 years, and we have 36 pages dedicated to a discussion about once again desperately searching for a #1 WR.

How in the hell is DG still highly regarded here?

The discussion about finding quality receivers has been going on probably since Mushin Muhammad initially left for Chicago before the 2005 season. We tried finding a complement for Smitty and the best solution ended up being... Muhammad coming back. The fact that the third best receiver for this franchise since the turn of the millennium is a tight end (no offense to Olsen) dampens my expectations that for once, we'll nail a draft pick or free agent signing regardless of who makes the call.

It's ok just let the Patriots grab him for a 2nd. They can afford to throw away picks. Hell even Atlanta would probably trade a 2nd round pick for Gordon.

You do realize Gordon is a freak athlete and has the skills to be the best WR in the NFL?

If you want a guy like that, you must trade something of value. The Browns are not trading Gordon away for a 4th round pick.

Funchess, Byrd, Samuel, Clay(Returns), Free Agent (Wallace/Pryor/M.Bryant), Draft Pick Round 3 pick 3b (DJ Moore).... Problem Solved.

Considering Mccaffrey and Olsen get touches....thats a solid lineup under Norv and leaves us with the 3 picks ahead of Moore to address DE, S, and whichever other hole Hurney decides to go after.

I’m not trading a 2nd rounder for a guy on the verge of being suspended for life, that is not worth throwing a 2nd rounder at regardless of how good he is. There’s a reason he hasn’t been traded yet and it’s probably because no team is willing to risk more than a 3rd for him.

    • Hope Koch recovers (he’s stated numerous times he doesn’t like to be called “koochie”) soon. But he does not instill confidence in the crease. I don’t have any confidence in any of our goalies, healthy or not. Andersen when available gives us the best chance to win but he’s never available.    Team has to explore trade options soon.
    • Respectfully, I completely disagree. Last year we were:  32nd in Sacks. 32nd in Turnovers.  32nd in Rushing TDs allowed  29th in Scoring.  We were absolutely atrocious on defense last year and that was with a full stable of weapons in Derek Brown, Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns that played all 17 games.  Using yards per game as a metric to guage our success lacks the context that because our offense was so inept teams were not driving the length of the field, they were starting at their 40-50 yard line.  This year, our Defense ranks:  31st in Sacks. Tied for 19th in Turnovers  31st in Rushing TDs allowed 32nd in Scoring  His defense fails to get pressure, fails to turn the ball over and fails to stop the run. Three things you absolutely have to do to be successful in the NFL.  Denver meanwhile has not missed a beat without him.  If another team wants to hire him as a HC and the Panthers get two 3rds for it I'll wish him the best and pack his bags myself.
