No prospect screams "WR1" to me after cursory glance

Yeah he’s an exclusive rights FA.

I honestly would. I don’t value our draft picks very much anymore after years of watching Gettleman and Hurney piss them away for the most part.

What are you hoping to accomplish with your first round pick? Find a legit stud. So why not just trade for a proven guy like Gordon.

Enough is enough!

Yeah, I think I would too. The suspensions give me pause but he sounds like he's learned his lesson. He'd be so nasty on this offense

I see a lot of people referencing the steelers but the team i have been impressed by when it comes to receivers is the Jaguars. Bad as that team has been over the last couple years the one thing they have had success at is getting the most out the receiver position. Drafted guys and undrafted guys they get the most even while getting nothing out the QB position.

I guess Funch's season means nothing *rolleyes.gif*, and using college tape to predict someone's value as a pro doesn't always cut the mustard.

What?

Funchess’ season showed that’s he’s not a “legitimate playmaker”. I don’t think you quite understand the definition of a playmaker. A legitimate playmaker makes that grab in the end zone Sunday. A legitimate playmaker doesn’t disappear against teams like the Pack and Bucs with weak secondaries.

And um... that second part. I can’t even help you here

a #1 WR would be dandy and all, but it's not happening for next season and that's ok.

Take a look at the 2015 season, look at our WRs. We just need to fill the gaps with capable vets who can help develop the younger guys; Funch, Byrd, Samuel but can also step up in the mean time (see: Jericho Cotchery). Letting Ginn walk was a big mistake, plain and simple. His speed is next to impossible to make up. But he isn't a #1 , neither was Cotch and neither is Funchess. Funchess needs his compliment ala Moose and Smitty.

I'd love Ridley at 24, but that's not happening.

He's still learning,  and it's not like he's in the mold of Steve Smith,  Megatron or Rice or Moss.  With help, he will be better than a lot of receivers that are playing this weekend.

To be fair, Funch was really hurt to finish the season, i had my doubts coming in to the season but he really stepped up.  He also still relatively young player with a lot of experience now. I think you go get someone to take the pressure off and he produces even more when he is healthy.

Funchess is caught in between. He isn’t quick/explosive to scare people that way and he doesn’t know how to properly use his size either.

He’s just an athletic 6’4” 225 pound dude who’ll get by his entire career on athleticism alone. He’s no bully and he’ll forever keep people wondering “what if”.

Funchess has the make up to be a stud and he’s easy to fall in love with as a prospect but he’s just not that guy.

Maybe it's their wr coach?  There's something there to copy for sure.

    • Strange, every news article and tweet I just searched all mentioned waivers. It is definitely his sixth year of at least 6 games. All I was trying to think of earlier was at the vet min could he beat out Bryce in camp next year lol. He's kinda got the old Darnold issue where he can obviously launch deep balls and qb run at a level Bryce will never achieve, but it sounds like he would be content being like a Josh Allen backup who doesn't throw the whole game plan out the window if he has to come in for a series or two. If we had him and for some reason still wanted to start Bryce he would kinda do what Justin Fields was doing the other night with Dangeruss, coming in for designed runs and maybe some play action/triple option rpo things to go deep. That would be so obvious and sad though. At least Russ can still sling it 40 yards in the air with a flick of the wrist
    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
