I don't remember who it was, some old school coach said the best coaches weren't the best players, they were the shitty players who tried like hell to get better.

I've heard that a lot from a number of interviews and those 30 for 30s or similar documentaries. Makes perfect sense and is easy to see throughout sports history.

If you got by mostly on elite athleticism you can't just turn to the guy you're teaching and be like...uh...just jump and catch it....(not talking about anyone in particular)

Actually I remember I just heard Shannon Sharpe talk about this like yesterday when discussing the guy who was talking about(calling out) Tom Brady....they said the young guys are mostly getting by on athleticism and Ray Lewis was trying to talk to one of the Falcons guys last year but he went to the club instead of watching film...Ray Lewis was saying the same thing about how most of the guys are actually getting by on that and the great ones watch or end up watching film non stop.

It's often true.

Great players tend to be super talented and frequently fail to understand that everybody else may not be.

Yea in my personal experience the best players we had in football couldn't tell you poo about how/why they were doing what they were doing.

In basketball it was different though...you actually had some good players with high IQ and knew why to do what.
