The Silver Lining - Norv's Never Had A QB Like Cam

I spent all day yesterday whining and wishing we could've hired a young innovative OC to bring some interesting life into this offense and watching said hopes and dreams get crushed with Norv Turner's hiring.

So now, I do a 180 and give you guys some hope that this may end up working out in the long run.

While I still would rather see our offense go in a different direction, going full Air Coryell isn't all too bad when you have Cam Newton.

One thing Turner lacked over the recent years are the type of players he needs to succeed. He didn't have too many big guys or separators for his long developing routes, nor did he have the tight end or power run game he needs for this system to thrive. And, the one thing he didn't have was Cam Newton.

One of Cam Newton's biggest strengths is his downfield passing. I've been raving about it during the 2016 off-season. Cam's one of the best in the NFL at throwing downfield into the tightest of windows. Since Turner enjoys vertical concepts, it's not too illogical to think Cam would succeed in this style of offense.

To add on, he also has his sproles in CMC and his TE in Greg Olsen. We'll also likely be drafting a Stewart heir this draft, and there's no doubt we still can implement a power run game.

It's not the style of offense I wanted nor will it be the one that will finally pad Cam's stats, but it certainly isn't an impossible case for it not to be better than Shula. If Norv has really taken the time during his time out of the league to re-evaluate a few things in his offense and learn up some new concepts, I won't be opposed as long as he makes us better.

The biggest issue is overcoming Matt Kalil, but that's for another time.

At first glance, it seems like this is more of a lateral move. But even then, he has experience, and it's still plausible Turner could end up better than Shula, despite the bar being low. 

Don't get your hopes up too much, but don't also dismiss the fact someone can change and be good when he may finally have the right personnel to implement his scheme.

That's about as much optimism as you'll get from me on this hiring.

that is an understatement. if we're getting Norv, it's imperative we go and get a guy like Sammy Watkins or a true WR1.

Funchess has not proven he can survive contested catch scenarios, which Turner needs.

This will be interesting with the roles reversed from what they were in SD. I do think that Rivera will defer to Turner on offense more than he did with Shula or someone younger had we brought them in here. Also, based on what he said in that video posted earlier, he knows how imperative it is to surround your elite QB with elite complimentary players. Seems like Rivera, Hurney and Turner have learned from their mistakes and are going on a redemption tour. I'm going to choose to be optimistic about it. It's no fun to feel otherwise about a game.

you are right , there is definitely more work to be done and pieces to be added...look for some big things to happen

I say we need at least 2, a FA and a drafted WR...we have plenty of room

If Norv does in fact take over, we need to focus on getting the best WR we can and draft a running back in the mold of a young JStew. 

Add those two pieces and this offense will be deadly under Norv.

My primary hope is that nobody is better at turning chicken poo into chicken salad than Cam Newton, when it comes to a dull predictable offense populated primarily by players who shouldn't even be on the field.

Hurney is just along for the ride.  Don't fool yourself into thinking otherwise.  Ron and Norv will be running the draft room as well as free agency.  All Hurney has to do is find the money.
