What makes Norv Turner's Air Coryell system go?

Found an interesting article written before Turner took the job in Minnesota.  It was written to gauge a potential fit with the Ravens, and of course he never went there.  But the author makes some interesting points that can be applied here.  First, the article:

If you accept the author's premise, how do you think the Panthers are currently equipped to make his system go?

• Is Funchess really the big receiver that can stretch the field and win jump balls?  Will Turner make Samuel work or do we need another big body, to replicate the VJax/Floyd experience?  Michael Irvin was a big receiver and he worked alongside a converted tight end and a rookie, so maybe we don't need two of them.  But is Funchess that guy?
• CMC is not what you think of when you think Power Running, is he?  Can he work with JStew filling a 2004 Stephen Davis role?  Good news for Alex Armah though.
• Outside of Matt Kalil, I think the offensive line is a strength.  But Cam is going to need a lot of time to let plays develop, so given where our hole is, will our line be strong enough?
• We have Greg Olsen.  That's the only definitive yes on this guy's list.

What do you guys think?

Funchess is for sure not a jump ball guy... All that height wasted, he plays like he's 5'10"

I grew up watching an Air Coryell coached Chargers team with Dan Fouts at QB...  Man they were fun to watch....

He's improved at attacking and high pointing the ball. Not a strength yet but he could get there.

Dez Bryant actually fits in not that I necessarily want him but I think he's disillusioned in Dallas....wouldn't be surprised if we made a run at him. This obv assumes he's cut which is going to happen. How the Cowboys pay him 12 then 16 mil is....they won't. They have actually been making smart decisions and cutting players like this(Ware, Demarco, etc) when their contract out performs their production.

Plus there are several others to pick from in FA...could be a good year to turn around the offense....we gotta do some poo about our LT though.

I'll agree with that, but he lacks physicality to win the jump balls, if he can start winning the jump balls against a defender, I'd be all in on him

Best thing still about Funchess is that he's young....he's young and getting lots of good experience....soon the young tag will wear off and he'll need to have it put together.

The Air Coryell is an awesome system but it requires the offense to have superior personnel at basically every position to succeed. The most important thing is to have elite tackles. We have one who appears to be and then we have Matt Kalil. When it's working it's unstoppable but when it is not it is worthless. This is why Cam is so up and down. Norv is going to change much of anything. It will be like Shula never left. The system is dependent on long developing routes with 7 step drops. WCO and it's variants are designed to still work with lesser personnel and are not nearly as susceptible to hot and cold spells. It is far more consistent and consistency is what I'm pretty sure everyone has been begging for.

Problem is the WCO offense requires a quarterback to have good footwork, is accurate and can throw players open. The short passing game is used as their running game and everything is on timing and anticipation. Tell me which of those quarterback qualities Newton is great at. If you think we can remake him at this point in his career without plenty of struggles you must think our new OC is going to named Houdini.

Javon Wims is great at high pointing and attacking the ball in the air. 

But we really need to find a left tackle and another legit WR

I still think Allen Robinson gets tagged but Allen Robinson is Funchess’ ceiling and would be what you’re looking for in a VJax 2.0

Personally, I love Coryell but given the diverse nature of our main offensive weapons (assuming Samuel is one), I don't understand why we don't switch to Erhardt-Perkins.

I think Pryor or Allen Robinson (assuming he's recovered) fits the Dez/Jackson/Floyd role.
