Giants Have The Pieces In Place To Name Steve Wilks Their Head Coach Today

The whole change of heart from their initial statements kind of amuses me.

I have to wonder if Gettleman convinced Mara to change his mind on what they wanted or if Mara simply gave Gettleman free rein to pick whomever he wanted despite his own statements.

Either way, Wilks doesn't fit at all into the description they originally gave of what there were looking for. I don't believe those statements were just smoke, so something had to change inside the building.

He's not exactly young either...this would be a very strange hire to me, but maybe they want to build with a defensive minded HC, that's pretty normal.

Was just about to post on that.

John Mara originally said the team wanted an experienced head coach or at the very least a long time coordinator. That would have ruled Wilks out.

It appears, however, that Gettleman may not have agreed on that front.

Probably because he has been an assistant coach for a few seasons

Mara specifically said "coordinator", but made it clear that what they really wanted was someone who had been a head coach before.

Gettleman's initial response when he was asked about that had kind of a "yeah, okay" vibe to it, so maybe they hadn't discussed it yet.

Gettleman's entire philosophy centers around attacking the quarterback and stopping the run.

Wilks blitzes more than any coach in the league.

Seems like it's only a matter of time.

Giants current DC is Steve Spagnoulo. He's got a good history there. I do wonder if Wilks would keep him.

Of course, the speculation is that Wilks wants to take Eric Washington with him.

The Giants are likely to enter the same territory the Panthers have the last several years with insisting on building the team predominantly around a defensive mindset while the offense struggles to find an identity. It isn't the 80's. This dinosaur mentality isn't going to get them over the hump unless Gettleman can have a 2017 Saints kind of draft and also put offensive pieces in place like the Steelers have for their QB. And none of that even matters until they get the QB.

They are stacked at WR and appear to have a future TE.  They need work on O-line, a RB, and obviously a QB.
