For those pleading for speed at the WR position

I really do hate this saying and I may get crushed for this but... the answer actually is on our roster currently.

Curtis Samuel - 4.31 40-yd dash at NFL combine. 20th best of ALL TIME

Damiere Byrd - 4.28 40-yd dash at his pro day. Obviously not comparable as he was not invited to the NFL combine.

Both of these players were not available for the most important game of our year. And yes, I know Samuel wasn't a world-beater prior to injury but he was hurt all offseason. I have a feeling if he is healthy for TC he will have an impact next year similar to what CMC had for us this year. We do have speed, it just was not present when we needed it. 

The point of this is - we have much bigger holes elsewhere. Namely DE, CB, S, T, TE and potentially guard if Norwell leaves. We should not be wasting valuable cap space on WR or drafting one high when we saw flashes of what speed looked like throughout the year. Cam made Kaelin Clay look serviceable! Imagine what he will do with his full arsenal of weapons heading into next season.

Swapping Ted Ginn for Russell Shepard was probably one of the biggest offseason blunders to date. Ginn's speed would have prevented teams from stacking the box against us time after time. Thanks Gettleman.

Samuel was literally hurt off and on since he showed up for OTAs. I have no faith in him at this point.

Byrd pretty much the same durability issue question mark surrounding him.

Both these guys need to be on our roster, but we cannot put any stock into them being the answer at WR.

We have to improve our talent level there.

I do agree with the OP that situation somewhat fixes itself when Samuel and Byrd return. However we need to sign a FA WR so this kind of sht doesn’t happen again.

Those two going down and not having anyone behind them are the reason we are out of the playoffs.

Listen, I like the potential of Samuel and Byrd but that doesn’t dispute the fact that we still need to bring in a #1 WR.

Man these guys all want Cam killed by 30. 

With our first 4 picks of course we should draft safety, corner, defensive end and offensive tackle ,.. no particular order, BPA.

im not crazy on Hurney drafting a wide receiver in any round— we will get Dwayne Jarrett or Ryne Robinson or some other shite.

free agents we bring in another safety, 2 wide receivers and I’m about a free agent running back like Blount or even Jeremy Hill if Cinci doesn’t keep him.

if we can bring back peppers and then defense, skip star to sign Norwell. 

We do those things I think we are ok.

How so?

Just because we have other needs doesn’t mean WR is any less of an issue. It just means we have a lot of holes to fill, which isn’t a good thing.

If we go into the season banking on Samuel or Byrd we are in some serious trouble.

Samuel will be a virtual rookie next year. Plus,  he was drafted to play in the slot (not saying that speed isn't desired there).  He is still raw.  

Byrd had one notable game. 

Both have an injury history now,  especially Byrd who is naturally a smaller guy.   Someone suggested in another thread that all he needs to do is put on some muscle,  but I don't think that they know that he already has put on muscle.  He is probably about as big as he is going to get and keep his edge. 

Even Funchess looked a little gimpy at different points during the season. 

I wouldn't say that either Byrd or Samuel (of course)  have proved they are elite route runners and are ready for the rigors of the pro game at this point.  As such, we really need to shore up the position and provide insurance and security.  An influx of talent is always welcome, and it breeds competition and brings out the best in the whole corps.
