Hurney on WFNZ

At this point, Hurney is going to be our GM until we get a new owner.  It's time we (Sadly) accept that, and hope he's fixed some of his issues from the first time, to mix with his positives.

Little dash of Hurney, little dash of Gettleman, and we've got one hell of a GM.

Yeah but only two of them were top 3 round picks, so it isn't surprising that our 4th round or lower picks didn't pan out. They rarely do.

It's surprising for 4th and 5th round WRs to never record a single catch. Long-term, sure many mid-rounders don't pan out but they usually do something.

I absolutely think DE is heavily in play with our first 4 picks. I'll be surprised if round 3 wraps up without us having added a DE in the draft, barring a FA signing.

Let's not overlook Deshon Hall either...  I still hope he develops into something special.

Me too, but he got redshirted for a reason. We put him on IR awfully quick for a guy who had a "sore knee". He obviously wasn't ready and the coaches didn't think he was going to be ready to contribute this season. Not a great sign for a 3rd round pick.

Yeah, I'm just hoping we have some sort of contingency plan in place that we haven't accounted for, otherwise, I'm really concerned about the number of holes we have going into next season...

We already knew WR sucked for years, LT, S, but now add DE, RB, CB, possibly LB, C, and LG?  Man...  that's concerning.

Yeah, I'd honestly forgotten how much he spammed WR picks between '10 and '12. He drafted 5 WRs in the span of 3 years and "hit" on only one if you can even consider Brandon LaFell a "hit". Three of those five guys never recorded a single NFL reception.

He did try addressing a lot of needs but that came with players like clausen, fua, brown, nakumura, etc.if he can get the right players I have no doubt he will adress the key needs of the team.

de also should def be in play, but barring a guy falling to us in the bottom of the first, id look for one rounds 2-3

A Hurney 2nd round pick... I can't wait.

Warning! This is going to contain some sour memories.

Here are the WRs drafted by Marty Hurney...

1998:

  • 4th round (106 overall) - Donald Hayes (144 catches for 1988 yards and 9 TDs)
  • 7th round (228 overall) - Jim Turner (not sure he ever made a roster)

2001:

  • 3rd round (74 overall) - Stevonne Latrell Smith (1031 catches for 14731 yards and 81 TDs)

2003:

  • 7th round (226 overall) - Walter Young (1 catch for 17 yards)

2004:

  • 2nd round (62 overall) - Keary Colbert (130 catches for 1629 yards and 8 TDs)
  • 5th round (163 overall) - Drew Carter (71 catches for 977 and 8 TDs)

2007:

  • 2nd round (45 overall) - Dwayne Jarrett (35 catches for 428 yards and 1 TD)
  • 4th round (118 overall) - Ryne Robinson (0 catches for 0 yards and 0 TDs)

2010:

  • 2nd round (78 overall) - Brandon LaFell (394 catches for 5263 yards and 29 TDs)
  • 3rd round (89 overall) - THE Armanti Edwards (0 catches for 0 yards and 0 TDs)
  • 6th round (198 overall) - David Gettis (37 catches for 508 yards and 3 TDs)

2011:

  • 5th round (132 overall) - Kealoha Pilares (0 catches for 0 yards and 0 TDs)

2012:

  • 4th round (104 overall) - Joe Adams (0 catches for 0 yards and 0 TDs)

Steve Smith was a great receiver and clearly the GOAT Panthers WR, but he was also a case of a blind squirrel finding a nut. The much maligned by Panthers fans Brandon LaFell was by far and away the 2nd best WR Hurney ever drafted. In fact, his 394 catches for 5263 yards and 29 TDs is the virtual equal to the 418 catches for 5547 yards and 26 TDs that the other 11 WRs drafted by Hurney not named Steve Smith or Brandon LaFell combined to produce during thier careers.

Marty Hurney wasn't named GM till 2002.

Oh snap, you're right. He was "Director of Football Adminstration" from 1998-2001. He doesn't even get credit for Smitty. Yikes! LaFell is by far the best of 10 WRs he drafted.

Edited original post to take away Smitty credit.
