Hurney on WFNZ

Warning! This is going to contain some sour memories.

*Edited to remove years and players for when Hurney was in the Panthers' front office, but was not the actual GM. Sorry Marty, no Smitty credit for you!

Here are the WRs drafted by Marty Hurney...

2003:

  • 7th round (226 overall) - Walter Young (1 catch for 17 yards)

2004:

  • 2nd round (62 overall) - Keary Colbert (130 catches for 1629 yards and 8 TDs)
  • 5th round (163 overall) - Drew Carter (71 catches for 977 and 8 TDs)

2007:

  • 2nd round (45 overall) - Dwayne Jarrett (35 catches for 428 yards and 1 TD)
  • 4th round (118 overall) - Ryne Robinson (0 catches for 0 yards and 0 TDs)

2010:

  • 2nd round (78 overall) - Brandon LaFell (394 catches for 5263 yards and 29 TDs)
  • 3rd round (89 overall) - THE Armanti Edwards (0 catches for 0 yards and 0 TDs)
  • 6th round (198 overall) - David Gettis (37 catches for 508 yards and 3 TDs)

2011:

  • 5th round (132 overall) - Kealoha Pilares (0 catches for 0 yards and 0 TDs)

2012:

  • 4th round (104 overall) - Joe Adams (0 catches for 0 yards and 0 TDs)

The much maligned by Panthers fans Brandon LaFell was by far and away the best WR Hurney ever drafted. In fact, his 394 catches for 5263 yards and 29 TDs is the virtual equal to the 418 catches for 5547 yards and 26 TDs that the other 9 WRs drafted by Hurney not named Brandon LaFell.

We have Daeshon Hall and the other guy whose dad played, but his name escapes me.  Sure if someone falls to us,  then by all means, but it's not really critical.

Daeshon Hall hasn't proven anything at the NFL level. That other guy was a UDFA for a reason and he recorded a grand total of 2 tackles this season. Peppers may or may not retire. I don't think it's a sure thing at all that he's back. I'm honestly leaning toward doubtful with JR being forced out. Surely to god CJ is done.

Basically, we're left with Mario Addison and Wes Horton as proven NFL players and who knows what behind them. Maybe Hall will be a player and maybe not. It's obvious he wasn't ready to contribute this year as quickly as we slapped him on the IR with a "sore knee".

And here's where I'm concerned.

Marty was never afraid to spend right up to the last penny of the salary cap, and with no real concern about what he might do to future years cap numbers.

With nothing guaranteed beyond next year (if that) Marty might look at the coming offseason as either his audition for the next owner or his last shot at glory.

Either of those scenarios could lead to him going all out on a spending spree and crippling us cap-wise for years to come.

History has shown us that sprees like that don't guarantee a Super Bowl (ask the Giants) so it could all be for nothing.

That's my nightmare scenario for next year.

We got into cap hell by re-signing our own guys. He was very decent when it came to the free agent market. Not all hits, but no glaring, costly miss.

Hurney didn’t have problems addressing needs,it’s who he address those needs with...has his talent evaluation improved ? Main question to be answered

Yeah, I'd honestly forgotten how much he spammed WR picks between '10 and '12. He drafted 5 WRs in the span of 3 years and "hit" on only one if you can even consider Brandon LaFell a "hit". Three of those five guys never recorded a single NFL reception.

Gettleman's FA signings this past offseason are looking pretty atrocious right now. Russell Shepard (3 years, $10M, $2.1M guaranteed; virtually zero chance to be on the roster next season). Captain Munnerlyn (4 years, $17.5M, $8M guaranteed; I'd say it's 50/50 he's on the roster next season. No real savings in cutting him, but making him a post-6/1 cut wouldn't really cost us anything over the next two seasons.) Matt "My brother is Ryan" Kalil (5 years, $55M, $31M guaranteed).

That's $108.5M with $41.1M guaranteed for WR who caught 17 passes for 201 yards and 1 TD, a nickelback who was a healthy scratch in two games and recorded 24 tackles, 2 sacks, defended 4 passes and caught 0 INTs and played in less than 39% of our defensive plays, and a LT who gave up 7.5 sacks (2nd most in his career) and committed 7 penalties (2nd most in his career) for 75 yards (2nd most in his career). Of the three players, I'd say that Kalil is the only one guaranteed to be on the roster next season.

Priority should definitely be DE. However I am interested to see what Hall and Obada could be. Seeing how Mario has improved and how Wes Horton started the season makes me optimistic of the coaching.

I absolutely think DE is heavily in play with our first 4 picks. I'll be surprised if round 3 wraps up without us having added a DE in the draft, barring a FA signing.

Our 15-1 season and even though we lost yesterday proved that too. We went 11-5 this season and we weren’t a very good team, it was all Cam down the stretch.

Give Cam real WR’s and when he goes into mission mode like yesterday, he’s going to put up so many points it won’t matter who is playing on defense.

We have enough pieces on defense to make the odd stop and with Cam that’s all you need. This organzation has tried building around Cam every which way for 7 years except for at the WR position. It’s time they finally give Cam WR’s and let him do his thing.

I’ve been begging for proper WR’s from day 1 regardless of what sacrifices that comes with. Cam is our MVP and we go as he goes no matter what, so give him the weapons and let’s go

You hoping for Calvin Ridley?

Yeah but only two of them were top 3 round picks, so it isn't surprising that our 4th round or lower picks didn't pan out. They rarely do.

    • His lack of statistical production is a massive red flag. The guy has worked out like Superman but has the stats of a total JAG. Not an NFL JAG. A college JAG that isn't even on the NFL radar. His stats are traaaaaash.
