That's what Gettleman always claimed to do, but then I watched him rescind Norman's franchise tag when free agency was down to bare bones and then panic spam draft picks at CBs in the following draft and I felt duped.

Think Bradberry and Worley digressed because Wilk's scheme was a little more aggressive and predictable than McDermott's.

If Wilks gets signed away and our new DC takes over we could see an improvement.   I wasn't overly excited about the triple dip in CBs in 2016 but I think with a DC that is slightly less aggressive and more unpredictable would help both of our young CBs.

They progressed, especially Worley. Our defense was terrible last season.

And here's where I'm concerned.

Marty was never afraid to spend right up to the last penny of the salary cap, and with no real concern about what he might do to future years cap numbers.

With nothing guaranteed beyond next year (if that) Marty might look at the coming offseason as either his audition for the next owner or his last shot at glory.

Either of those scenarios could lead to him going all out on a spending spree and crippling us cap-wise for years to come.

History has shown us that sprees like that don't guarantee a Super Bowl (ask the Giants) so it could all be for nothing.

That's my nightmare scenario for next year.

Hurney handled the teams salery very well for the most of his tenure. The CBA being redone tied his hands. He had to hold off on extending Vets he normally would have extended before.  When the CBA finially got done, we had a lot of players deserving and needing their extensions. That's what truly put us in CAP he'll.

I’d really like Ridley.

He’s by far the best route runner in some time and can do it all including win deep.

He just checks so many boxes for what we need.

what about you?

I don't watch much college ball, but I caught bits and pieces of the Championship game. I wasn't overly impressed. His QB didn't look great though (1st half). Maybe it was just the Georgia defense, but Ridley didn't seem to get a ton of separation.

Remember when Hurney traded our 1st round picks the next year in back to back drafts and came away with Jeff Otah and Everrete Brown? Then the next year he traded what would become the #33 overall pick for THE Armanti "Hillbilly Vick" Edwards?

It's unbelievable how many people here seem open to the idea of another full blown Hurney era.

This is the biggest thing that worries me. Don't trade your first rounder picks. He tried to trade the 2011 1st rounder at one point. That would have set us back a decade.

Our WR core is the greatest skill and talent need on our team. It's not an age issue or a depth issue like other positions. We simply don't have guys who are respected for what the skill requires in the league. Natural route-running, pass catchers who can consistently get open. And you don't fix that problem with one guy unless he's bonafied elite, and you push everyone else down a spot. Considering we probably shouldn't break the bank for a FA one, I say we immediately target a very good #2 type, veteran WR in FA (who may have some potential as a #1) AND go WR 1st round.

Veteran FA WR, Funchess, #1 rookie WR, Samuel, Byrd. Those are your 5. You give Cam plenty to survive injuries and you protect against some of the bust-potential of your youth. These two newbies to the team need to be route-running, pass catchers. There are a few in FA we can go after and I'm big on Christian Kirk right now. What we also lack is true competition. Nobody should be given anything. It will improve the play with guys actually having to earn spots.

2nd Round - I may be alone, but give me a RB. This draft is deep in the position, but we gotta re-structure or cut J-Stew. We need a three-down back with some burst, who can run in-between the tackles, but bring some other skills to the table. I look at Ingram and Kamara, and if we're still calling ourselves a running team, we need youth to be with Cam for his days. We don't need to go 1st round, but there are legit starters in the 2nd-3rd. Give me a Sony Michel or Damien Harris honestly to go with CMac. Guys who are solid but have burst. Much less predictable, and it's guys used to splitting carries anyway.

3rd Round - Safety and DE. I want to address safety in FA too, and the cuts will be important to see what kind of money we can spend, because Norwell should be a priority. Not going OT in the first 3 rounds is really predicated on that.

Marty Hurney: "Andrew Norwell is a hell of a player. There isn't a GM out there who doesn't want that guy on his roster. But you just have to look at the layout of the whole roster."

I think a lot of people forget how few high dollar players are really on a roster.  I would guess most teams really only h ave 4-6 guys with cap hits over $10m any given year, and probably another handful making $5-$10M.

I'm guessing here but when he refers to the "layout of the whole roster" he might be referring to the fact that alot of the times those high dollar players are somewhat scattered throughout your positional groups.

In regards to Norwell  we already have 3 high priced players (Kalil, Kalil, and Turner) on the offensive line.  If we were to move on from Matt and/or Ryan this year or next I wouldn't expect us to replace either with a high dollar player if we were to resign Norwell this year.

I could actually see us resigning Norwell and then both Kalils leaving after next year.  If I understand Matt's contract correctly it would make more sense to move on after next year and Ryan's contract ends also.  If we plan on replacing either cheaply it would be wise to draft replacements this year, unless the staff thinks Moton can move into the tackle spot.
