Hurney on WFNZ

This thread is headed in a direction that's gonna depress me.

Remember when Hurney traded our 1st round picks the next year in back to back drafts and came away with Jeff Otah and Everrete Brown? Then the next year he traded what would become the #33 overall pick for THE Armanti "Hillbilly Vick" Edwards?

It's unbelievable how many people here seem open to the idea of another full blown Hurney era.

That was the streak that basically ushered him out. He had some success prior to that but you can't whiff that badly on top 3 round draft picks in back-to-back drafts and not do lasting roster damage.

adams had a great highlight reel and was a media darling, but he had a stroke while he was in college, and that alone might have had teams take him off their board entirely

and of course hurney scooped him up in the 4th and we acted like it was the steal of the 2nd day. i mean half the ppl on here that wanted him did so only bc he was about the same size as smith and was a punt returner. he took one hit in 2012 and called it a career.

Warning! This is going to contain some sour memories.

*Edited to remove years and players for when Hurney was in the Panthers' front office, but was not the actual GM. Sorry Marty, no Smitty credit for you!

Here are the WRs drafted by Marty Hurney...

2003:

  • 7th round (226 overall) - Walter Young (1 catch for 17 yards)

2004:

  • 2nd round (62 overall) - Keary Colbert (130 catches for 1629 yards and 8 TDs)
  • 5th round (163 overall) - Drew Carter (71 catches for 977 and 8 TDs)

2007:

  • 2nd round (45 overall) - Dwayne Jarrett (35 catches for 428 yards and 1 TD)
  • 4th round (118 overall) - Ryne Robinson (0 catches for 0 yards and 0 TDs)

2010:

  • 2nd round (78 overall) - Brandon LaFell (394 catches for 5263 yards and 29 TDs)
  • 3rd round (89 overall) - THE Armanti Edwards (0 catches for 0 yards and 0 TDs)
  • 6th round (198 overall) - David Gettis (37 catches for 508 yards and 3 TDs)

2011:

  • 5th round (132 overall) - Kealoha Pilares (0 catches for 0 yards and 0 TDs)

2012:

  • 4th round (104 overall) - Joe Adams (0 catches for 0 yards and 0 TDs)

The much maligned by Panthers fans Brandon LaFell was by far and away the best WR Hurney ever drafted. In fact, his 394 catches for 5263 yards and 29 TDs is the virtual equal to the 418 catches for 5547 yards and 26 TDs that the other 9 WRs drafted by Hurney not named Brandon LaFell.

First of all, I tend disregard anyone taken in the 5th round or later when judging a draft because they are such a crapshoot and all have significant questions about them.  A few of the guys on the list were physically good picks, but they just didn't have the mental makeup to succeed at the next level, whether it was because of work ethic, maturity, drive, whatever (I'm looking at you Colbert, Jarrett, and Adams).  A couple more were ST guys that also had injury problems here that led to their failure (Pilares and Robinson).  Most of these guys were fliers that he hoped would develop, but never did.  So, I don't think we can get a realistic gauge based off of this list.

With that said, I don't disagree with your general premise that all of the receivers he brought in were underwhelming, but I don't think you are recognizing the real issue.  And that's the fact he never really emphasized the wide receiver in the draft...even when it was a legit need.  He only took two receivers as high as the 2nd round (LaFell was actually a 3rd round pick), and then, they were only mid-late 2nd round picks.

My point is that while he recognizes the need to improve the WR position, will he invest a 1st round pick in one or stick with his old philosophy of bringing in mid-late round projects that he feels have some potential?  Or will he bring in a top receiver from FA, or just get mid-level solid guy whose not really #1 quality (like Moncrief)?

I like the philosophy that you address all positions of need through free agency and follow that up with those same positions of need in the draft.  You not only get experience but you don't have to rush the mid-level picks into starting.  Rounds 1 and 2 should be starters with possible round 3 as starters.

That's what Gettleman always claimed to do, but then I watched him rescind Norman's franchise tag when free agency was down to bare bones and then panic spam draft picks at CBs in the following draft and I felt duped.

Don’t forget Dasheon Hall coming back from injury

And we've now signed that special exemption ST guy, Obada, to a futures contract.  He was flashing in the preseason. Excited about his potential.

Plus Bryan Cox.  I'm less worried about DL than I expected to be...  Biggest issue could be losing Eric Washington if Wilks gets.a HC post.
