The Failure of the Gettleman era in Carolina. Close, but no cigar. [Don't want to read a mini rant, don't open!]

This game was pretty much a display of every stupid fuging move he's made the last few years. Terrible unreliable "receivers", Matt Kalil wiffing left and right, the young cornerbacks struggling, the ancient safeties too slow to bail them out. The depth at some positions being so great that players can barely get onto the field, even though they were drafted so high.

Can't say I disagree. Had lots of opportunity to build a straight up winning team and didn't. I have defended DG for years now.

But Norman and Smitty really would've made a difference in this game. Along with a slew of other decisions that may have gone differently.

I'll always be thankful for a SB run in 2015, but the bad decisions thereafter will haunt this team for years.

Smitty looked great this year

Gman sucked.  Not sure why anyone worshiped him?  For getting us out of the cap hell that the lockout and JR caused?  Please.  Gman sucked ass.  His drafts sucked.  His FA pickups sucked. I am glad Hurney is back.  He drafted far more superstars than Gman ever wished!

ramen noodles really do suck don't they?

He did some good things. He was the best GM we’ve ever had. But man he was bad at 1st round picks and skimped on positions he shouldn’t have been skimping on. I agree this season is mostly on him, the good an the bad. He put us in position to be a solid 11 win team, but not in good enough position to be a serious super bowl contender. And for all his gruff, he didn’t put his foot down when he most should have: firing shula.

Doesn't the coach hire and fire the coordinators?

Yes. But the GM controls the whole team. If he fired shula, shula would be fired.

Edit: which is what I meant by putting his foot down. Should have told Ron that either shula goes or they both go.

Per reports this past offseason, Gettleman tried to nudge Rivera into moving on from Shula, but Rivera "stuck his neck out" for Shula.

But it didn't really matter.

Igo has said several times that Jerry Richardson loved having a member of the Shula family as part of the Panthers.  So basically, Shula was untouchable.

And now he has an extension along with Rivera, soooo...

I really liked him at first.  I overlooked him playing chicken with Gamble, then Gross, and losing both times.  I forgave him for Smitty.  I thought his initial draft was really impressive (and still do--Hurney would have taken Star but would he have doubled down with Short?), and his next draft seemed to knock it out of the park.

Now that he's been gone a while, I find myself paying more attention to his utter neglect of the secondary, and the offensive line (I give the coaching staff a LOT more credit for Norwell than I do the GM that signed a UDFA).  I still think Shaq Thompson and Vernon Butler are luxury picks.  He let Norman walk and then blew the next draft searching for a replacement--imagine Norman and Bradberry as our starters, and maybe a developing DE that isn't 30 years old on the roster instead of a marginal CB.  Or maybe a legit Safety?

Go to a Giants board and look at the fan discussions around his signing--they know what's up.  I don't think he was really better than Hurney, he was just a better asshole.  He's certainly not better than Polian, who built a contender from scratch in two years (and Polian is a better asshole than DG).  I think he's going to flame out in New York, but not until he dumps Eli and his contract, and gets into trouble going against OBJ.  Will be interesting to see.

I really hope that this next GM actually IS the best GM in franchise history.  Because that sure isn't DG.

Yep. Jerry’s hands are all over this team and have been for a while. It’s a breath of fresh air that we are going to see a new direction for this franchise in two years time.

If you look at the last couple seasons from the draft going into the season we have barely gotten anything out of our draft picks for the season. No one has contributed right off the bat as much as Star and Short and its not even close. You can blame injuries and coaching too, its makes no difference.... its hurt us bad and it MUST CHANGE.
