The Failure of the Gettleman era in Carolina. Close, but no cigar. [Don't want to read a mini rant, don't open!]

The more things change, the more they stay the same. So close, yet so far. The man should have been able to get us over the hump, but he failed.  He got out-GMed by Mickey "Mouse" Loomis. They got better over the last couple of seasons, while we failed to address weaknesses---if not got weaker as a direct result of his management. I don't feel that it's necessary to go over every particular, but suffice it to say that he left us ass-out in regards to our defensive backfield with the J-No debacle. And don't tell me about how this defense is built. It's stupid to think that you can make a legitimate run at a Super Bowl with mediocre corners. It's a failed philosophy that I haven't seen work.  You have to have great players sprinkled in with good ones, or at the very least good ones, at every position, and defensive back is no exception.

You've also seen, year after year, what it looks like to trot out rookies or virtual rookies at the receiver position. You must have some experienced veterans to make a legit run.  Why we let Ginn walk and not replace him with (let's say) Torrey Smith, I have no idea.  I hate to have 20/20 hindsight vision, but really it's not because these were things being called for when Dave let Ginn go to our rival.

As opposed to investing, even temporarily, in a stalwart at LT, Dave decided to invest in more questionable protection for our most important layer on the field.  We've been there and done that, right? Sometimes enough is enough.  What is that saying about the definition of insanity?

What makes me so upset is that with the curtain closing on some pretty good football careers, as well as half-assing it for our one-of-a-kind QB while his prime is scooting right along, Gettleman failed to get us over the top when we were so damned close.  Damn, if Mickey Loomis can take a Saints team that was pretty much considered to have a garbage defense, with all kinds of question marks and  turn them into solid contenders, then there was no reason at all that Dave couldn't have given us what we needed to finish what we started with that magical season that was 2015. NO REASON!

He was an entertaining guy, and got the cap under control, but he left way too much meat on the bone at the absolute wrong time.  He had the ball in his hands right at the goal line but fumbled it being a hard-ass, showboating for no apparent reason. That is the legacy of the Gettleman era as far as I'm concerned. The man knows how to build a D-line, but unfortunately it takes more than simply a D-line to win a championship. Certain positions, you just can't fake or compensate for for lack of experience and skill.  You've seen it fail, now stop with the excuses and rationalizations.

I think he was great at fixing our cap issues, but his personnel decisions are tough to defend. We have the 3rd or 4th best roster in a 4 team division, and Loomis, who has been considered a laughingstock with 0 cap space to work with, hit it out of the park with his 2017 draft.

Can't say I disagree. Had lots of opportunity to build a straight up winning team and didn't. I have defended DG for years now.

But Norman and Smitty really would've made a difference in this game. Along with a slew of other decisions that may have gone differently.

I'll always be thankful for a SB run in 2015, but the bad decisions thereafter will haunt this team for years.

Loomis and the saints had the best draft in NFL history to shore up a porous defense and give a SB champion qb and veteran offense some more weapons.  So yes, Gettleman lost to Loomis.  And he is gone.  So what is the point?  Why can't this team move on?

This division will be even stronger next year.  Going to be some great games.

Gman sucked.  Not sure why anyone worshiped him?  For getting us out of the cap hell that the lockout and JR caused?  Please.  Gman sucked ass.  His drafts sucked.  His FA pickups sucked. I am glad Hurney is back.  He drafted far more superstars than Gman ever wished!
