If you’re a GM do you hire Steve Wilks

They held the Saints to under 50 yards rushing after their “record numbers”, 3 and outs and stopped them for the most part.

keep in mind he has no secondary. We have a good front 7 but our 2013 secondary were WAY better than this group and all we did was talk about how bad they were, that our kickass front 7 did it all.

i think Wilks did a pretty damn good job with what he has.

Imagine we draft Claiborne(I like CMac, not a slight on him) and had an upgrade at safety for Wilks to use?

anyway, who knows what kind of Head coach he will be, but I think he’s a good DC.

2013 Secondary?  No way are you thinking the same one I am.  Our Starting corners were Drayton Florence and Melvin White.  Neither of them are in the NFL, that was Florence's last year and Melvin White lasted like 1 more season.  Captain Munnerlyn was our nickel and Norman was in the doghouse after fuging up the end of the bills game.  At safety, we had Quinton Mikell and the only decent piece of our secondary in Mike Mitchell.  Our secondary this year isn't good, but it's worlds better than the 2013 secondary.

While this years front 7 is good, it's older, it's not near as good as what we had in 2013.  People forget how good CJ and Hardy were together in 2013, it was downright filthy how good they were.  Like historically good.  When combined with good young DT's and Luke and TD being younger and healthier, Man, unstoppable.

In today’s NFL I wouldn’t hire a defensive minded coach if he worked for free. The league is all about offense

And before anyone says Belichik he does both and has been coaching both for decades

Defensive minded doesn't automatically mean conservative run offense.

Look at Chud for example. RR defensive guru but hired an explosive aggressive playcaller.

You can have both.

But was it really his scheming that got us sacks? Or was it talent in the front 7? I feel like a lot of our sacks came on 4 man rushes and a lot of the blitzes never got there...

This. If we drop 7 into coverage on every play (as opposed to rushing 7), we'd have a top ten pass defense while giving up more rushing yards than ever.

Exactly, 2013 front 7 were killers—- better than our front 7 now.

that secondary was better than this secondary.

I say the safeties and corners you mentioned were better than the group we have now.

I need someone smarter than i to comment but...with all the blitzing that Wilks did...was he having our CBs jam at the line? Drew Brees ate our corners up yesterday because it felt like all these timing routes were getting off without any problem. If you're blitzing...shouldn't you be trying to throw off the timing on a WRs route with a jam? Feels like that NEVER happened.

Well it was just a numbers game. You send them enough they will get home.

Your post made me think of the Steeler and Cowboy teams from the Late 70's under Chuck Knoll and Tom Landry. Both guys were defensive minded coaches. The defenses were so good they had nicknames (The Steel Curtain, the Doomsday defense).

Yet, they were two of the most explosive teams in the league after the league opened up the passing game in 1978. Bradshaw and Staubach were the QBs, Franco Harris and Tony Dorsett were the feature backs, Swann and Stallworth were the Steeler WR's and the Cowboys had Drew Pearson and Tony Hill. Those teams could score on anybody, including each other. The 77 Cowboy team is the only team in history to finish as the #1 defensive and offensive team.

Bill Walsh's SanFrancisco teams were always among the top offensive teams and defensive teams during the heyday of the 49ers and Jimmy Johnson's Cowboys were balanced in the early 90's.

You can have both if you have the right coach, personnel, and offensive/defensive schemes.

Bears just hired Chiefs OC Matt Nagy. I don't think they were contenders for Wilks anyway.

It does however illustrate that playoff fails don't necessarily dissuade teams from hiring coaches. Also that teams can be impatient and hire coaches from less successful teams just to keep from having to wait.
