If you’re a GM do you hire Steve Wilks

I saw on twitter earlier that Brees had a passer rating of 121 with both his TDs when the Panthers blitzed. I'll see if I can find it again.

Wilks biggest issue has been terribly ineffective blitzes that he uses far to often. This has lead to our secondary getting torched all season.

edit: found it

The Panthers spent serious money and draft currency on building a d-line that could generate pressure without blitzing. The Panthers plan failed. The Saints countered our moves by building an o-line that could stop our d-line's pass rush. Checkmate. Wilks decided to blitz a 1st ballot HoF QB surrounded by weapons because our d-line was useless against their o-line. The result was 3 losses to the Saints. I hated his play calling. We didn't have the right pieces in place to do what he wanted, but he ignored that and did it anyway. Not smart, and it may have cost him a head coaching job elsewhere.

The cold hard reality. We probably overpaid for KK. He's not Warren Sapp, he's not Kris Jenkins, he's a guy who can be completely shut down by a good o-line. Luke is not the right LB for what Wilks wants to do, so one of them needs to go, or Wilks needs to change his plan. Furthermore our DBs are worse than we thought. Bradberry is slow and stiff, Worley looks more like a safety and can barely play CB at all, Captain is blitzed like crazy and he's god awful terrible at it, and our safeties don't belong as starters in the NFL. CJ and TD are done, and Pepp might hang it up after Wilks play calling debacle.

The good news is that we really are a number 1 WR away from have a pretty scary offense next season.

Hope he leaves honestly. He uses Shaq one of our better blitz LB's as a cover guy and uses Luke and Thomas as blitzing LB's way too much. His scheme left our not great CBs on a island forcing the Safeties to cheat. If we didn't have talent this unit would have been last in the league.

Hard to disagree with this.  Seemed our D did well in spite of him this year, as his blitz happy tendencies really fuged us at the most important times.  Without all the talent we had, Wilks would be fired from the Browns in a heartbeat

Honestly though, what does Wilks have on his resume that's good? Blitzing half the time and still not getting pressure? Allowing tons of long plays all year long and having a defense that severely underperformed considering the talent level of the team? Not making adjustments in-game? He's had one year as a coordinator and it was not good. Wilks makes himself look very good, but frankly the production isn't there on D. Bradberry regressing is a HUGE red flag for him as a coach, whether he's DB coach or D-coordinator, still on him.

Well you would figure he would create a system that would be secondary friendly. He did quite the opposite. His scheme also caused a bunch of sacks but no ints. A DC that can create turnovers is much better than a DC that gets a bunch of sacks.

They held the Saints to under 50 yards rushing after their “record numbers”, 3 and outs and stopped them for the most part.

keep in mind he has no secondary. We have a good front 7 but our 2013 secondary were WAY better than this group and all we did was talk about how bad they were, that our kickass front 7 did it all.

i think Wilks did a pretty damn good job with what he has.

Imagine we draft Claiborne(I like CMac, not a slight on him) and had an upgrade at safety for Wilks to use?

anyway, who knows what kind of Head coach he will be, but I think he’s a good DC.

We thought we had a good secondary bc we didn't draft or sign anyone. Wilks CHOSE to go into the season thinking they were good. If he didn't I guarantee you we would've tried to get better there.

How good was Chudzinski when he got the Browns job?

Wilks has been on the head coaching radar for a couple of years now (even before he was a DC) and you've seen enough of his pressers to know he's gonna be a great interview.

Regardless of what we think of him in this game, or in general, I think he gets a job this year.

And yeah, the early playoff exit could actually help.  Teams are impatient.

But was it really his scheming that got us sacks? Or was it talent in the front 7? I feel like a lot of our sacks came on 4 man rushes and a lot of the blitzes never got there...

I don’t disagree with anything you said really. I’m more commenting on whether it should happen. Clearly Shud never should’ve gotten a head coaching job, like most of the Browns’ coaches... Wilks shouldn’t get a HC job based on his production. Though I agree that he’d be a good interviewer and comes across as a good HC. There are owners/GMs out there who will fall for that trap. They shouldn’t, but I agree that they very well may this year.

Take a look at Payton's career path.

People forget that Payton was fired by John Fassel for being ineffective as the Giants OC.  After that, he was hired by Bill Parcells in 2003 to run the Cowboys offense.  So yeah, that 2003 playoff game where we destroyed the Cowboys, Sean Payton was the OC.

He'd continue to coach there for two more years when the Cowboys largely weren't relevant.  His final season was in 2005 when they missed the playoffs, with the team scoring only 10 points in their final game of the year (they lost to us again the week before, scoring 20).

From that, you might not have predicted he's win the Super Bowl as a head coach, but he did.

So who knows?
