While I don't see a chance in hell the team moves, I do agree that there will be some funding for stadium upgrades.  But the question is how much?  I don't think it will be more than 100-200 million (and that's generous) if the proposal doesn't include some clear plan for the city to recoup the investment/generate revenue.  The politicians will want to look like they are doing everything they can to keep the team, but they know it would be political suicide to raise taxes enough to provide anything more than that without being able to convince the public that it is a good investment.

The biggest issue new owners would face in trying to move the team (aside from the money they would have to fork out to buy the team) is that BOA is still a financially viable stadium that provides plenty of boxes and such that you need in modern stadiums.  Typically, teams use the financial hardship angle to get justify to the league why they need to move, but that is not the case here.  So, it would be an extremely hard sell to the rest of the league.

Hotel, car rental tax raises, bonds and you can get 300m and pay it off in 30 years or sooner.

I remember how that one turned out.  And the Panthers are more popular than the Hornets.

Charlotte City Council sounds like they're in an absolute panic.  The governor is involved and talking about doing whatever it takes, etc.

I have zero doubt they'll get what they want.  It's just a question of how.

Where do you get panic?  All I've seen is that they said they will work to keep the team.  Nothing overly drastic, and nothing any other city leader wouldn't say when in this situation.

Maybe, maybe not.  I think you're being optimistic and underestimating the uproar if the city does this.  Any tax increase, no matter the source would be met with heavy resistance. People would want to know that it is worth their investment, and since there is little chance of the team moving, the return on the investment would be very limited since the upgrades to the stadium would only have a minimal impact on revenue.

From watching them on the news when the sale was announced.  And not just what they said, but the look in their eyes.

There's also stuff like this (from the Observer column linked earlier).

Quote

I mention this because I heard you snickering about how James “Smuggie” Mitchell of the City Council is already rolling over to please the next owner of the Carolina Panthers. Mitchell, who chairs the powerful economic development committee, says he’s eager to meet and see what can be done to ensure the team will remain committed to Charlotte.

Throw in that the governor of the state is now involved, talking about doing whatever they have to.

I don't take the relocation threat seriously, but if it did occur the worst thing that'd happen to me is my favorite team wouldn't be around anymore.  Politicians, on the other hand, have to take the threat very seriously because the consequences to them would be far more serious.

It's how it's done down here in Texas, holding those events after the stadium was built has allowed Arlington to be almost done paying back the loan it took put for over 300m. Doing it again for the Rangers this year. Those teams get what ever they want from the cities down here. Hotel tax is 9%, car rental tax is 5%, mixed drinks have an extra 1.5% tax as well to help pay for stadiums.

Exactly how many are really jumping in to buy team anyway. From what has happened so far not many are even interested in being a part of the sale.

Dying league for many reasons.  Despite the ego of many that will make it outrageously ridiculous and overpriced, many billionaires see the writing on the wall for the league long term.

Ad revenue is up 5% despite the lower viewership, over 500m a month from ad revenue. Despite the lower viewers it's still the majority of what Americans watch on TV, 66% of the top 50 most watched tv programs were NFL games. NFL game Pass subscriptions in Europe and the US are up as people move away from cable tv.

So it's not dying anytime soon, actually the value of the NFL will go up about 10b dollars over the next 3 years.

Look, you can keep going on this "dying league" thing if you want to, but it's irrelevant to the sale of the Panthers.

I get that you want this to be true, but it's not, and no matter how many times you post about it that's not going to change.

IMO any new owner needs to worry far more about alienating their base, the PSL holder, than tax payers.  If some idiot comes in and then demands a stadium built with public funds all while raising ticket prices and forcing PSL holders to pony up many times the money we paid previously they will have issues.  I for one am a regular middle class guy, and spending 10-15k to get my same seats in a new stadium on top of my current investment is a no-go for me. That would have course be on top of massive ticket price increases.  You only need to look at Metlife to see what happens to ticket prices with a new stadium.  All that money is a nice down payment on a new house, and even though I love the Panthers I’m not paying that

Not only that, but it’s so raw that most are no-go with the new regime by their point man Felix the jackass even TALKING about it.

I was just thinking this. I bought my seats in 2006 for $7500 each. Currently, the team has that section at $18k (however, earlier in the season, they were $25k - all section values have dropped). Even at that, having to drop close to $40 for new seats just isn't doable.

Yep, not doable.  The place will be filled with ticket brokers selling to opposing fan bases, and if they do what I think they may I will never go to another home game
