That's the only thing stopping it, plenty of people live around or near the city. Dome already built and the city doesn't mind spending to upgrade it for a NFL team. Hell no one in Texas cares about public funding because they get it. Hell the Cowboys got 300m of public funding for a practice facility in Frisco. lol

That’s not even close to the “only thing stopping it” (but even if it was it’d be enough).  20% of San Antonio lives below the poverty line.  The Alamodome?  What a joke.  Get a clue!!!

NFL when asked about BOA stadium, said that's a discussion for later. Sale of the team comes first. So the NFL wants to upgrade it majority or replace it. NFL also wants the team to stay but wouldn't rule out moving the team over a stadium issue. I'm not saying Felix, I'm saying anyone who buys the team will want a new stadium because that's what the NFL wants.

it makes too much sense as owner to not want and demand a new stadium. Team is worth 2.1b, sale price will likely be higher. So you're already out of money as the new owner. You're going to want an immediate return on that investment... A new stadium or massive renovations to BOA is going to happen and Charlotte will pay or the Panthers will be gone in 2020.

St. Louis offered to build a new stadium and approved funding for it, same in Oakland. Toronto and London are international options.

San Antonio with a 70k seat dome already owned by the city and willing to spend money to upgrade it.

San Diego just passed a law on voting measures so they can revote to get public funding for a new stadium.

Cliff notes version-St Louis?  Ha!  San Diego?  3 So Cal teams, a broke municipality, and fresh wounds?  No chance. San Antonio?  Nada.  Toronto?  Best Canadian accent, “Hell no”. London?  Best Brit accent, “Bloody hell no mate”.  All insane moves would hurt the league tremendously but latter two would be league suicide for many reasons.

Nope, this was pre Katrina in 2001 but Tom Benson was in talks with Paul Godfrey on the sale and relocation of the Saints. Talk also about them moving to San Antonio but it never got as serious as them moving to Toronto in 2001.

The Bills have been the most recent team linked to Toronto though.

Gotcha.

Wouldn't there possibly be a division change if Panthers were relocated to another city other than any of the Carolinas like a switch with another team and Panthers would no longer be part of NFC South(Falcons, Bucs, and Aints would be having a party).

No.

16% of Charlotte compared to 18.5% in San Antonio. Yet the city would and has been upgrading the Dome. just spent 60m on it recently. Is on record saying they would spend to upgrade it to NFL standards. It's the 10th largest covered stadium.

The saints were also about to be bought and moved to Toronto before Katrina. They became a rally point for the state, so the state agreed to renovate the stadium and spent 41m public. Feema spent 115m.

There was discussions and even an offer of over 1b that was declined but the two sides were still talking about the sale and relocation of the saints.

New Orleans is also a $hithole MANY years removed from it’s thriving heyday-not the growing, corporate Carolinas with 15 million people in 2 states.

I've said many times they don't want to move the team but public funding for a new stadium is going to happen. 100% chance of it happening in the next 2 years.

Pretty much.

People can hold their breath and stomp their feet all they want.  It's gonna happen anyway.

This group won't last long in the bidding process if they can buy the team for 2.1.  Still think the final sale price will be close to 3.0 billion.

We will just have to wait and see who is bidding before we even get to a new stadium deal.  Still don't think anything is wrong with BOA.  And when it comes down to it the NFL will not allow the team to move.

You must remember the Hornets fiasco in the early 2000's. Politicians will back the public if there is to much uproar.  Which there would be as the team will piss off the tax payers and PSL owners at the same time.

You think the sale price goes that far over the team worth? Team is worth 2.1b right now and about 500m of that is in the Brand worth and stadium worth.

I remember how that one turned out.  And the Panthers are more popular than the Hornets.

Charlotte City Council sounds like they're in an absolute panic.  The governor is involved and talking about doing whatever it takes, etc.

I have zero doubt they'll get what they want.  It's just a question of how.

While I don't see a chance in hell the team moves, I do agree that there will be some funding for stadium upgrades.  But the question is how much?  I don't think it will be more than 100-200 million (and that's generous) if the proposal doesn't include some clear plan for the city to recoup the investment/generate revenue.  The politicians will want to look like they are doing everything they can to keep the team, but they know it would be political suicide to raise taxes enough to provide anything more than that without being able to convince the public that it is a good investment.

The biggest issue new owners would face in trying to move the team (aside from the money they would have to fork out to buy the team) is that BOA is still a financially viable stadium that provides plenty of boxes and such that you need in modern stadiums.  Typically, teams use the financial hardship angle to get justify to the league why they need to move, but that is not the case here.  So, it would be an extremely hard sell to the rest of the league.
