Do you think Rivera will leave Panthers?

For those cheering the possibility, stop and think what it really means.  As much as you may not like Rivera, there are lots of worse options out there, and chances are, if Rivera goes, we'll end up with one of those bad options.

Think about it, we are essentially a lame-duck franchise.  Nobody knows who our owners will be. Nor do they know who our GM will be.  So, any highly qualified coach will likely be hesitant to sign here.  There is too much uncertainty, and it could easily end up as a one and done situation if the new owner wants his own guy.  Not to mention, would the team even be willing to sign a guy to a multi-year, high dollar contract since it could be seen as a negative by potential owners?

What most likely would happen is that either Wilkes or Shula would be given the job.  And if the interest Wilks is receiving is legitimate and not Rooney Rule related, then he could choose to go to a more stable situation, leaving Mike Shula as the odds-on favorite to be the next coach of the Carolina Panthers.  This is clearly a case of be careful of what you wish for.

Not really. The Panthers moving to sign RR before this game actually reinforces that these rumors were true.

I'd agree.

Sounds like Hurney might have panicked (or maybe Richardson did).

To clarify though, do we know yet if the contract is actually signed or if they just "agreed to terms"?

I haven't heard for sure - I just landed in NO. But watch this be some massive contract to "keep RR here".

There is a pattern of that.

Florio points out (accurately) that the eventual new owners aren't necessarily bound by this. Also probably worth noting that they may not be as averse to buying out coaching contracts as Jerry Richardson is.

I could see a case where Richardson does this thinking "well, there's no way they can get rid of him now" but yeah, they still could.

Dear Lord, please don't let him do the same thing with Marty Hurney.

According to NFL.com, it hasn't been inked yet.  Is it possible that Ron is testing his value for talks with the Bears?

Well if I were trying to set my value up for someone else, I'd negotiate with Marty first as well.
