Do You Think Christian McCaffrey will Ever Learn How To Break Tackles?

The "he just needs to bulk up" argument makes some sense on the surface. But i don't know that it has been that significant of a factor overall. That long run where he had full daylight ahead and still couldn't get to the end zone is a prime example of what I'm talking about. An 8th overall pick is supposed to turn that into 6 points, period. Maybe he's overthinking it or trying to do too much. But he's got to step up against the Saints and take a huge step next year or the selection begins to look bleak.

yea because no RB in the history of the NFL has improved or bulked up. hey whats the score gonna be this weekend? was thinking about putting 100 smackers on it in vegas.

I think the best post 2000 comparision to CMC is Tiki Barber in terms of their running ability and body size. Tiki was small AF and he averaged 3.8, 3.2, and 4.2 yards per carry his first 3 seasons and only got 136, 52, and 62 carries in his first 3 seasons

When Tiki finally started to see a heavier workload in his 4th season , he got over 200 carries in all of his subsequent seasons except for 1 and the lowest he averaged per carry in that timespan was 4.6 . He also posted 5 1000 yard seasons in a row when the giants were giving him a heavy dose of carries. And this guy was an inch shorter than CMC and weighed about the same as CMC does now.

from Wikipedia : Originally he was considered a third-down, "change of pace" back, Barber became a standout starting running back and the all-time leader in rushing yards in New York Giants history. In 2005, he was the NFL's top yardage gainer from the line of scrimmage. He was voted by his peers to three Pro Bowls. From 2003-2006, Tiki Barber gained the most yards from scrimmage by any NFL running back in that 4-year period.

Im thinking CMCs career is going to be simular but CMC is much more of a threat in the passing game than Tiki was early in his career.

I don't know if 10 pounds is going to make enough of a difference. Either way it's on CMC to improve. We know he has the potential. We need more from our 8th overall pick. We're reduced to bragging about his "yards from scrimmage".

Certainly not all of this is his fault, Shula lacks basic ingenuity. But force feeding him even more than we already are isn't the answer. CMC should be making more out of the opportunities given to him.

And fans shouldn't be ready to throw our MVP QB in the trash for failing to once again carry our offense week in and week out while CMC fails to break arm and ankle tackles and drops passes for easy first downs.

Cam is a 7 year vet who is making the same mistakes he was season 1. Cam is not an MVP unless we’re going to be stuck in 2015.

CMC is a rookie thrown into an offense with very few options and even less now that Samuel is injured. He can’t help where he was drafted.

Figures you’d be one to compare.

HUGE difference, and they’re both suffering big time from a joke at OC and zero LT and now G play.

Also, 10 lbs of muscle makes a ginormous difference and anyone who has stepped in a gym or played a contact spot knows this. For someone already in great muscular shape, like CMC, that kind of muscle will take close to a year to build...and that’s taking into account he busts ass and has professionals guiding him. Now that’s just muscle weight he’ll probably add 5-10 more of fat with that.

And at 15-20 lbs more after a nice (and first) offseason I’ll bet you anything he’ll break more tackles, I just hope he doesn’t lose speed doing it. But really it all depends on where and what kind of weight this staff (or a new one) will want him to put on.

Rookie Running Back Yards Per Carry

  • Walter Payton : 3.5 ypc
  • Ladanian Tomlinson : 3.6 ypc
  • CMC : 3.7 ypc
  • Tiki Barber : 3.8 ypc
  • Emmitt Smith : 3.9 ypc
  • OJ Simpson : 3.9 ypc
  • Marshawn Lynch 4.0 ypc
  • Curtis Martin : 4.0 ypc
  • Lesean McCoy 4.1 ypc

And CMC has been averaging well over 4 yards a carry during the 2nd half of the season when the oline has actually been running blocking well

100% of his focus this offseason should be adding strength. It's not that he's just getting tackled, it's that NFL defenders straight up ragdoll him.

Whaaaat, no way Jose. Adding strength will just slow him down just listen to everyone on this draft board when people brought up how weak cmc was/ is

breaking tackles is more mentality/attitude than it is size or strength.

mccaffrey just doesn't have it.

Nope. This is like when pro athletes talk about 90% of the game being mental. That might be the case IF you have the prerequisite physical tools, but if you don't, that "10%" becomes 100% because you aren't going anywhere anyway. I could have the greatest attitude in the world and I'm still not even getting an NFL training camp invite. I simply don't have the prerequisite physical tools. CMC doesn't have NFL RB strength right now. Physically, he's basically a prototypical NFL slot receiver playing RB. He's gotta get stronger, period.

But he had the 2 long runs. You can’t just not count them. That’s not how this works

The point is he was that great this year. Not that easy to run over nfl players He really offers straight ahead power like Stew. In those two runs he had huge holes and wasn’t touched

Ouch you got called a racist by a guy that doesn’t like white running backs after you owned him to a level that he couldn’t respond other than his more than Shula predictable play-call response. Win.
