Stew saw 8+ Men in the box more than any other RB this year

I am firmly on the let's get a new OC wagon. But can you honestly say that between DG and Hurney this year that we've done him any favors with the WR core? It's a shitshow to put it kindly. I think with a better OC we could mask some of the deficiencies, but the lack of run game from our RB's would still hamper this offense either way you cut it.

running and passing are symbiotic. the patriots demonstrate this all the time. if they can’t run they move the chains with the short pass. sometimes they do power running and that is usually when the defense they’re playing is weak up the middle. they can also chuck it but they don’t live off of deep passes like we do. the weapons shula was provided at the beginning of the season were sufficient. yet cam’s passing is down from last year, and he’s also our leading rusher. injuries, i can only be so forgiving in that aspect. from what we’ve seen the last five seasons, it’s clear that the offense will never evolve under shula.

i think we’ve seen the best of cam in this current system. and he’s done a tremendous job considering the philosophical simplicity of the offense. the only thing that would make it work and take the burden to move the chains off of him a little bit is to have ridiculous raw talent at these other skill positions, which is not as easy as finding an OC that can design plays better. you find someone like that and let cam do some pre snap reads, maybe don’t take almost all 40 seconds off the clock before you line up between plays, and we’ll get better from there. it’s either that or try to find the next deandre hopkins.

Play Design / Routes > WR Talent

That would help but why doesn’t Cam audible more?

because they get to the line of scrimmage with 4 seconds left almost every play, because Shula has been a slow play caller his entire career at every job he's had

...think we would audible once in awhile...

I just love when people say this.

As if Cam is flummoxed as to how to read the pre-snap positioning of safeties and LBs.

Or as if he can make those reads, he just personally refuses to change the play because he enjoys failure and losing.

OR... now stay with me now because this might blow your mind... he is provided with a limited ability to adjust to passing plays at the line because he has a head coach and offensive coordinator that (1) have an uttee lack of urgency to throw the ball and score points because (2) they place a very high level of importance upon not only maintaining possession of the ball but also to drive up the TOP stat and to keep the other teams’s offense off the field.

So, in summation, you can either believe (1) *derp* Cam’s a moron who doesn’t understand how to audible *derp* or (2) his coaches prefer a low-risk, clock-sapping run play as their obvious game strategy.

Its so funny to observe this fanbase and see who picks what.

2015 was about the best and worst thing for Cam and the team. We were so dominant in the run game (2nd in the league) having a trio like Tolbert, Stew, and Cam, PLUS we were 2nd in the league in percentage of pass plays resulting in 1st downs. That means we were going deep and down the field more scoring (Ginn had a career outlier of 10 TDs; Greg had 1000+ yards), but also prevented defenses from stacking the box.

We were leading the league in points per game and TOP possession in 2015, because we were a threat to score downfield at any point, and so dominant in the trench. We moved chains playing fast and slow. It’s called balance in play calling and personnel. Include the D getting you off the field, and you get to the SB.

Today, Tolbert is gone and Stewart is older. We’re still a top 4 running team, but Cam has to be our leading rusher in order for us to get there. Problem. We’re 16th (middle of the road) in pass completions for 1st downs because we let Ginn go and didn’t replace him with a legit deep threat. We’re still top 4 in the league in TOP but down to 12th in scoring. So we still hold the ball for a long time, but can’t finish a drive as well scoring. This is in big part because we use all of a play clock but can’t sustain drives with no deep threats.

But we’re 11-5. Why? Because our defense is consistently great and that guy Cam. We’ve done poorly maintaining balance in personnel and done a poor job adjusting our playcalling/scheming to the loss of personnel balance.

We still think it’s 2015 and the NFL stands for “Not For Long” for a reason. You have to add to your strengths and continue to limit your weaknesses, because teams adjust. Instead of letting Ginn go, we should’ve kept him and added ANOTHER legit deep threat. Then the addition of CMac would be paying off even more, providing the balance.

We instead have overvalued TOP, undervalued scoring, and tried to do the same things with substantially weaker receivers, while being the most predictable offense in the league. We literally rely on a single unstoppable force each week to overcome weakness and predictability - Cam. And that’s why we win or lose completely based off of his performance.

This is nothing new.

The Panthers have been a run first team, and will continue to be a run first team.

With a RB as good as Stewart, damn straight they're going to stack the box on early downs. They must do their best to not allow him to get to the second level, where his tackle breaking ability translates to bigger runs.
