So how is the Panthers GM search going?

People don't really appreciate just how badly Hurney fuged this team. This old Grantland article goes through it pretty well,

The good news is the only guys up for extensions this offseason are ones who actually deserve them like Norwell and Star.

Think they'll enjoy living in New York?

As to the topic, I think pretty much everybody knows that if Richardson had stayed in place, there was never going to be a new GM search.

Either Marty Hurney would have remained "interim" for as long as the league let him get away with it or he'd have given a cursory interview to Don Gregory before making Hurney permanent.

I mean really, putting someone who's a candidate for a job in charge of finding other candidates would have to be the most ignorant thing I've ever heard of.

That is, unless you didn't really intend to have other serious candidates.

There will be no changes at GM or coaching staff (unless they leave voluntarily) until new ownership.  Nobody will want to come here knowing that once the team is sold the new owner will most likely want to bring in his own people ... especially at the GM spot.

we're going to be stuck in a holding pattern for a few months. not a great situation to be in heading into he draft.

everything depends on finding a new owner.

Honestly, I don't see us being a relevant team again for a few years once new ownership is in place. It's the nature of change in the NFL. Everything will be different even if the same personnel are on board.

Executives that stop doing their jobs to let M&A play out dont have jobs when the dust settles.  If you think the whole search is on hold until the new owner(s) are sorted out I think you're fooling yourselves and just because the Panthers are not making press releases doesn't mean nothing is happening.

There will be virtually no effort to find a GM when we don't have a new ownership in place is my guess. We don't know what Richardson said to Hurney about the GM position and who would approve the new GM. If we were 1-15 this year finding a new GM and staff might be seen as a good idea to increase the value of the team. But we went 11-5 and are in the playoffs. That typically suggests the coaches and front office are doing a pretty good job and doesn't usually suggest wholesale changes are in order.

The whole let's look for a new GM decision was made when Richardson figured he would be here until he dies. Given he is stepping down to limit the huge scandal, this changes everything. Who would approve this new GM? It wouldn't be a CEO who is an employee it would be the new owner. Her job as CEO is run the day to day operations not interview and hire her boss without signoff by the new owner. Who says she understands what we need in a GM or has the authority to even look for one. You are making some huge assumptions here. I doubt the GM search is in her job duties. And the reason you wouldn't hire one now is that a GM isn't going to interview for a job he wouldn't assume right away and work for an unknown owner who didn't pick him. No your dislike for Hurney is coloring your take on this issue.

One thing that concerns me is JR will stipulate that any new owner must sign Rivera and Hurney long term, please talk me off the ledge here and say that is unlikely.

He won't do that. Once he sells it the new guys can do anything they want. But at this point you would be stupid to replace them coming off an 11-5 season and a playoff appearance
