Hurney believed wrongly that Jake would bounce back after the Arizona disaster. Hurney believed wrongly that Matt Moore could replace Jake. Hurney confessed to the media that after getting a better look at Matt that he simply had flaws that would make it impossible for him to be our franchise QB. Hurney made matters worse by drafting Pickles. Fox probably wanted to stick by Jake even when it was over, but I'm not sure what Fox thought of Moore, and Fox had checked out by the time Pickles was drafted. Fox didn't even bother to watch Pickles play before the draft. Fox was in fug you mode.

See I think Matt Moore had eclipsed Jake Delhomme back in 07 when he played spot duty. The smart move would have been release Jake after Arizona playoffs. Start Moore in 09 and give him a chance. Fox and or Hurney never gave him a shot and never gave him a leash to grow. He was always better than Clausen. We would have at least fielded a competitive team  and they might have kept their jobs.

Jake was never really a franchise QB. We all wanted to believe he was but really he was just a starter who maximized his talent for a few years and made some incredible throws now and again. His 03/04 run was an amazing feel good story and he had the respect of his teammates which is major hard on with John Fox. But really he was like  a 6.5/10 Kurt Warner.  Had he never got hurt who knows what might have happened. But he was always a QB on the verge of getting exposed. When he couldn’t make the tight throws anymore he was done.

Somehow every other GM is able to do their job without being a dickhead or asshole to their franchise players.

Face it: DG sucked at a major part of his job, and lost his job because of it.

Yeah, that Belichick guy is never gonna get anywhere unless he starts being nicer to people.

I wanted Jake out after the AZ game, but he and Fox might as well have been life partners by that point. There were rumors floating that Panthers offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson wasn't happy with Moore, and on one occasion Jeff was caught on camera during a game ranting in his booth and doing a face palm in reacting to Moore not seeing a wide open receiver in the endzone. The way I look at it is this, we have Cam because we had Pickles, and we had Pickles because we had Hurney. Glass half full. Circle of life.

Jake was poop as far as accuracy, but he had Smith and a hell of a deep ball. Warner was light years better than Jake.

The problem is that Matt Moore wasn't good. In 2007 Jake was having a career year before he got hurt (64% completion percentage, 8-1 TD/INT ratio, 111.8 QB rating). It's not unfair to say he'd make a Pro Bowl with those numbers sustained, maybe even be in the MVP hunt if it hadn't been a 16-0 Pats year. Then he gets hurt and we perform really badly under multiple QBs, including Moore.

In 2008 he looks really good for like half the year than regresses rapidly, likely because of the surgery's lingering effects on his arm strength. Schaub had a similar rapid drop-off. The team made the wrong choice in hindsight extending him, but Moore wasn't a long or even short-term answer. Fox/Delhomme was a package deal.

I remember seeing all week on ESPN how the Steelers threw  James Harrison a going away party and he cried and thanked them for all they had done for him. It was the proper way for a longtime successful franchise to treat one of their best players ever.

In other news, Bill Belichek refuses to ask Harrison for any information on Steelers.
