Question for Camera peeps?

So I got a used DSLR and kit lens about two months ago and I have learned how to use it.  I'm still pretty inconsistent.    Normally, I would not ask this now, but I'm really tired of the poopy quality out of my kit lens.  I am using a Canon T5i, which for the deal I got, I think is a pretty good starter camera.  I shoot video (stationary/tripod mounted) and indoor stuff (family, school events, etc).  I haven't tried shooting sports yet, I'll try that next time my son plays.

So I want a faster lens.  On my kit is goes up to f/3.5 at 18mm, and down to f/6.5 at 55mm.  I'm looking primarily at the Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM and the 40mm f/2.8 pancake.  Do any of you wonderful people have any experience with either of these lenses?  The down side to the 50mm is that while it "can" work at 1.8, it isn't sharp enough.  It only starts to get good at 2.8 which makes me think the 40mm would be better in the long run?  I have been doing a fair bit (ok a lot) of youtube/google research.

Or should I look at something else entirely?
