This, from SI's Extra Mustard on the Monday after the story broke, pretty much sums up how I perceive the media feels about this story:

"I had no idea SI was working on this big expose of Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, but we got him pretty good with this report of his sexual misconduct and it looks like he's going to sell the team."

"We got him pretty good."

Not, 'This is a story that deserves to be told to help prevent future victims of sexual harassment in the workplace.'

Not, 'This story deserved to be heard, rather than swept under the rug after a payout and NDA so that it won't happen again in the future.'

No, straight from an SI writer: "We got him pretty good."

Excuse me if I don't find their motives sincere.

This has always been a hit job on Richardson, likely a pouty fit that Cam and the Panthers didn't spend their Sundays dumping on service members.

Given that realty, its difficult not to side with him even if the allegations are true. Exploiting the victims for political gain is exploitation and abuse all the same.

Some really good points made.

And to the "story" that is trying to be made about Rivera...  People are complicated- Rivera's interactions with Richardson have probably all been positive.  Richardson gave Rivera his first HC job and had faith in him when most of the fanbase and the national media (who would never rush to judgement) wanted him fired.

That isn't to say the things alleged against Richardson aren't true.  But they are still allegations.  It's funny how the media bangs the "innocent until proven guilty" drum for some things and other times they try to play judge, jury, and executioner.

I do believe there is some truth in these allegations or else he wouldn't have moved so quickly to sell the team.  But at the same time, once word got out Richardson settled with one person, others could have came forward too for a payday.

Our social media age doesn't give any room for nuance or for waiting for the facts.  Richardson isn't the honorable man he wanted to portray, but I don't think he's a monster either.

Anyway, he doesn't owe anyone anything, especially the media.  He did the right thing given the circumstances, and I feel confident he will make sure the team stays in Charlotte.

I will remember him as the man who brought the NFL to the Carolinas but didn't live up to the standard he set for himself

JR isn't retarded. Nobody in his situation should ever open their mouth publicly until it's resolved.

Except all the people that have that are listed in the article.

In fact most people in this scenario say something, that is what the PR department is for.

Just now, Cat said:

One is a choice the other is being a victim. The difference is quite clear.

Nothing JR was accused of is illegal, nor should it be. Those "victims" had a choice as well. Leave the organization and never have to deal with JR again. They made their choice to stay.

Unfortunately, for many it's a choice until it no longer is a) bearable or b) worth it. Too often victims put up with it until A or B. Certainly it's possible that is the case for swimsuit models, no?

He has already said everything he needs to say.

He spoke loud and clear on the matter.

He took out his checkbook and said that he was more likely than not to lose in a court.

I dont care about anything he might say.  He already proved that he thinks a jury would convict him so any denials or apologies at this point would be meaningless.

It's men like you that make me concerned about the world my daughter will grow up in.

I am not making light of the allegations against JR, and I have no idea what he did, but I am with you with the motives. Until proven otherwise, I think this is all about prying this team off the cranky old man's Kung Fu grip ... This is a different time. This is the age of the digital roman mob where feelings are facts, allegations are convictions and settlements mean admission of guilt
