Could Raleigh eventually host a Franchise?

Define "several." If the growth continues, I could see it as a possibility in 20-30 years, especially if another franchise decides to move. Being the 10th most populous state, I am not sure we would make the "multiple NFL team" list, however.

The 18th largest state had multiple teams until recently; mostly because one of those cities is a solid baseball town.

Since Raleigh is a solid college town, I believe we'd see a similar fate.

I'm from Charlotte,  but live in the Triangle for school. Raleigh could support and NFL team for sure. The area has proven it can support teams. Its has vibrant college fan bases for football, and basketball. It also has really supported the Hurricanes in the past. Yea they are bad now, but I regularly went to Hornets games during their 7 win season and would buy tickets on stubhub for 11 bucks in the 100's section and the arena would be at like 70% capacity for shitty games against bad teams. It is hard to ask fans to come out regularly when a franchise is continuously putting out a bad product. The fair weather argument is dumb too, Raleigh is no more fairweather than Charlotte. I went to the Celtics-Hornets game last night and it was probably 50% Celtics fans. These are the same type of people who filled formerly Time Warner Cable Arena w/ Lebron James Miami Heat jerseys, but if you go to a Heat Hornets game now there are no Heat fans. These are also the same people who Panthers fans, but not when the Steelers, or Packers play at B of A. Fact is, there are fairweather fans everywhere, and that isn't a reason Raleigh shouldn't have a team. But, it leads into my other point on the real reason they shouldn't have a team. We as a fan base are finally starting to get to the point where we have people around my age (early, mid, late 20's) who grew up on the Panthers. We aren't fans who picked up the Panthers when they moved here after rooting for the Redskins, Steelers, Cowboys for most of our lives. We are the people that will have kids who only grow up as Panther fans and won't have any of that two team bullshit. Adding a team in Raleigh would only undo a lot of that. It will make everyone north pf Greensboro, and on the coast root for a Raleigh team because of proximity and the ability to easily go to games there. We don't need that, Panthers should be the team for the Carolinas.

I think that is the thing that people don't realize. It takes a lot of time to build a serious fan base in a professional sport. In college, the path is a little easier because you have a recurring population that actually attends the universities every year. For the Panthers, we had to overcome the fact that our state had Redskins and other fanbases that existed here due to the lack of an NFL team. No we are having to overcome the fact that a large portion of our population explosion is from people moving from other areas. You are going to have mixed success with those people(most of which will be bandwagon behavior) but kids that grew up with the Panthers or grew up in North Carolina are going to be much more likely to support those franchises moving forward because they will have that more intimate local connection to the team that is associated with their formative years.

I disagree that having two teams would be a negative in terms of pulling away Panthers support. The only likely scenario where Raleigh does have a team is for decades of continued high population growth to make the Triangle area large enough to even warrant an NFL franchise. That is a situation in which it would be possible for both to coexist. That being said, I don't think Raleigh is a likely spot for an NFL team in my lifetime, unless there are some dramatic changes to the state and the area as a whole.

“College basketball is dead”

this is YOUR opinion and you have no data or evidence to back this claim up. You sound like one of the snowflake reporters that wasted 5 years chasing a ghost at UNC.

Like horse racing and boxing and their scandals of yesteryear, the ncaa is fine.

big bad cheatin UNC and dem fake classus done ruined my love of college sports, I ain’t never goin to watch again.  Boooooohoooooo

hey doofus - the reason one of the top public universities in the country wasn’t “punished” is due to the fact the bullshit that you have been fed from various local and national media outlets for 5+ years was sensationalized garbage and most of it wasn’t true. That has now been proven. The classes were not fake, but were easier than what most of the curriculum at UNC and many athletes that would not be at UNC if not for their athletic talents were directed to take them to help them. If you don’t think that this sort of thing is available at every institution with a prosperous athletic department then I have some ocean front real estate in west va that I’d love for u to take a look at.

Sounds like gobbledygook from a wannabe scholar.

Who’s really butthurt here?  You?  Or me that feels great not having to invest an ounce of time or money in the sleezy sham that is the ncaa?

And if you think I’m not alone and the impact isn’t long lasting then I’m the one with the WV ocean front real estate to sell.

All this talk of new ownership has got me thinking. Being from the Triangle, seeing how much growth we have every year along with the fact we already have an NHL team, anyone else think this could be possible in the next several years.

PS- Maybe even the Panthers?

It's very possible.  Infrastructure is there.  Lot of big colleges close by.  A lot of money in the area.  I wouldn't mind the Panthers moving there but would rather see an AFC team.  Would be great if both NC teams were in the superbowl.

NC will never have 2 NFL teams. Ever.

I have no inside knowledge or proof but It seems that the nfl tends to stay out of college markets...

It seemed for the longest time the north was for pro sports because their colleges suck and are smaller (other than Ohio state) and the south is where college football reigned Supreme...

It’s a money thing. Nothing against Raleigh but it’s a college area.
