Could Vince McMahon buy the Panthers

Vince McMahon will never be allowed to own an NFL franchise. The other owners won't approve -- they won't forget the XFL debacle and they already have Jerry Jones as their loudmouth asshole. Sorry, it isn't going to happen. And, in the end, McMahon is mighty wealthy, but he isn't "own an NFL team" wealthy. It's the difference between leasing a mid-range BMW and owning a collection of pristine 1950s Mercedes.

Whats with the narrative that McMahon can't afford an NFL team lol?

You must not understand how big the range of wealth is. McMahon is Trump-type wealth... there's some cash, there's some real estate, there's shares of big time stock, and there are massive amounts of debt and/or huge expenses (in McMahon's case). To you and I, those guys are mega rich. To the really, really rich like the Kahns, Richardsons, Fords, Jones, etc... those are bush leaguers.

To buy the Panthers, the league will require a single individual to pony up like a 70% (from memory here, might be a bit less or a bit more) cash payment on $2-3 billion (and possible $4 billion) franchise with only a small portion of that money coming from financing (loans, etc...) with the remainder coming from minority stakeholders. Then, and only then, the group of 31 remaining owners will go into a room and pretty much decide if they want that purchaser to join the club. If they say no, then it's over. If they say yes, then that person has to come up with the remaining balance and secure stadium rights and show that they have enough operating cash on hand to cover the team for the next couple of years without any revenue from the team.

In short, Vince McMahon owning the Panthers is as likely as an Andre the Giant out of retirement tour.

(edit to add: Vince McMahon net worth is $1.57 billion as of 2017. He simply does not have the liquid assets to make the move.)

As someone who never watched wrestling growing up, why does everyone think he would be a bad owner?

From what I've gathered he plays a character, like they all do, for entertainment purposes to sell the product of wrestling. Is he actually an obnoxious A-hole IRL or is it just a schtick for the cameras?

Idk man, with as profitable wrestling is, the idea that McMahon is on the lower tier and not even worthy of consideration for purchasing an NFL Team sounds like total crap.

McMahon would rank as the 15th/16th wealthiest owner in the league, using Forbes data from 2015

Personally, I don't (yet) buy the idea that he's cashing in WWE stocks to bring back the XFL...  What I do know is that he clearly has an interest in football, and his NC ties make the correlations between him and the Panthers' sale obvious...

I don't know what kind of owner he would be, nor do I know if he could generate the 'on hand' cash needed to outright purchase the team...  But I wouldn't underestimate a billionaire with the drive to make it happen...  It's entirely possible that the rebirth talk of the XFL is merely a smokescreen to put pressure on the NFL let him in as an owner, simply to keep him from being the league's 'competition' as the owner of another league...  If he owns a team, he certainly wouldn't have an interest in starting another competing league...

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss him just yet...  he's simply too smart of a businessman...

He has several sexual harassment charges, and a rape accusation.  None proven, but In that regard, he might be worse than JR.  He was accused of distributing steroids, and admitted taking them. And his role as head of the WWE would tend to draw a lot of attention, a good bit of it negative.

Also, he would have no loyalty to this area, making it more likely that he might move the team at some point.

He is from NC and owns a restaurant down here.

On top of that, he also does not listen to the fan base and sticks to what is "best for business" which has been hurting WWE in attendance lately. They are constantly raving about how they develop talent but most of the time, most don't get over more then a mid-carder and it is usually the same guys, who fans hate, that they try to force people to like (i.e. John Cena, Roman Reigns)

Furthermore, I highly doubt he is looking to buy this team for the sole fact that he has invested his stocks in Alpha Entertainment and has trademarked the XFL under Alpha recently, which indicates he may be trying to restart the XFL.
