Byrd to IR, and other Tuesday news

It isn't just about Byrd. We're talking body of work. And through 2 different GM's the last several years this franchise has lacked the basic foresight to build a WR core with adequate depth.

I understand your frustration.

But you have to recognize your team's identity.  We have an owner/coach who want a grind-it-out old school offense and a bruising defense.  You can't invest huge resources on WRs if your goal is to grind the other team into submission.  You put your money into your QB, RB, Offensive Line, and TE and defense.  Ever wonder why we drafted a freakishly large possession WR in the first round?

Its not always aesthetically pleasing, and it doesn't usually result in gaudy stats.  But its who we are.

I don't think I would make that broad of a statement. We have done fairly well running the ball(both with running backs and offensive linemen) and we have had two of the best receiving TE's in NFL history. For whatever reason, WR's have somewhat eluded us. I suspect it is just pure talent evaluation because I cannot recall any of our "bust" WR draft picks that have left our team and performed particularly well.

All of this is why I'm ready for a new owner and hopefully a fresh GM with new ideas and innovations.

Look at the turn around with the Rams and their QB/offense. Yes they have Gurley, and that's a huge boost obviously, but they weren't afraid to adapt and adjust to the changing league. We need that or the Saints and Falcons are going to bridge the gap while we just spin our wheels.

To be clear I'm speaking to this season in particular. I know Byrd was green around the gills so to speak early on when we first signed him. That's not even open for debate.

I also liked Gettleman, and I thought he did many good things here. But he also tried too hard to find gems via FA. You can't always turn rags into riches. He watched Ted Ginn walk out the door twice to the detriment of our offense while he tried to insert random jags into crucial roles. The second time proving to be quite frankly a near catastrophic decision. He got too cute and was too smart for his own good, and that was ultimately his undoing as a GM. We need better than both him and Hurney.

That's because Byrd was KB's back up at what I believe they call the X. While Funchess played the Z. We traded KB of course, so we could move Funchess to the X, since it better fit him. But either way he should've been higher up on the depth chart.

I also think Samuel (The shiny new toy) played a part in that as well.

Now if one of those guys get hurt they are fuged.

isn't that true for everyone though?  If Julio gets hurt is Atlanta fuged?  If Gurley gets hurt are the rams fuged?  Can Pittsburgh do anything without Brown or Bell?

Cam is our star.  He lifts everyone's game.  As long as he's still kicking, the Panthers have a shot regardless of who our WRs are.

Jerry Richardson has always believed in a "win with defense" philosophy. It's why he only hires defensive head coaches.

Rivera's philosophy of offense is basically the same as what Buddy Ryan had with Randall Cunningham. Just let your big play quarterback make a couple of plays a game and the defense will handle the rest.

When your head coach is following an offensive philosophy espoused by Buddy Ryan of all people, what does that tell you?

Woof. Injuries and trades certainly played a part in this unit but that right there is why every playoff game will be an uphill battle. Teams will sell-out to stop the run, put their best corner on Funchess, and one of three WR’s who wouldn’t be on many other rosters in the NFL are going to have to play out their minds and step up. Need to address this position in free agency in a big way this off-season. That is ugly.

Exact same issue (aside from officiating) that lost us SB50.  No one could get open or separation for the matter,  Cam was forced to hold the ball, and they pinned their ears back and came after him relentlessly.  It's also similar to what the Bucs did Sunday.  They dare us to beat them throwing bc Cam has no one to throw to.

Look at TB defense rankings. Dead last in almost every category and look at our performance AT HOME. With Shula as our OC and another WR going down, I don't feel good about our chances at all. Olsen and Funchess doubled. Clay catching is not good, Shepard catching isn't good and Bersin is just Bersin. Cam Newton is our run game (we'll see what happens when Trai returns), but I have no faith in Stew doing anything meaningful with 12+ carries and of course Ron won't play CAP

We literally could've thrown the ball to CMC out the backfield on a swing route on every down, but what does Shula do, he has him run a Texas route right into the teeth of their defensive scheme.

Not sure I'd use the Rams as your shining light to copy.  This is their first winning season since 2003.  From 2004 to 2016 they are 68-139-1.

They were helped tremendously playing in the weakest division in the NFC and playing the weakest division in the AFC this year.  I think it is very possible they are having a season like our 2013: 12-4, one and done, and back to earth the next year.

I'm not sure what other team I'd pick to try to emulate.  There are not too many teams that have had the kind of recent success that we have had.  The Eagles are sort of riding high, so maybe them.  But for now, there is only one other NFC team with more wins than the Panthers in the last 5 years (Panthers=51, Seattle=54).  I kind of like what we're doing, just sad about the injuries.

Good grief my dude, I didn't say let's be exactly like the Rams. I said let's try to adapt. It's not the 1950's anymore. We need some offensive philosophy in here instead of the same tired "let's dump an entire draft into our defense" philosophy that has paved the way for us being overly reliant on Cam Newton saving the day in both rushing and passing.
