Byrd to IR, and other Tuesday news

After Ginn walked, Byrd got injured. He hasn't necessarily been buried this season, just hurt.

His rookie season he was on the practice squad and the team went to the Super Bowl with a 15-1 record. Last season he was on the final roster (during Gentleman's time with the team). He started the season on the roster, was released, resigned to practice squad, then promoted to the final roster.

He was on the roster again this season but broke his arm vs New England.

I understand that a lot of people did not like Gettleman. Players are said to typically need 3 years to develop into the kind of pro that they will be (QBs can take up to 5). Gettleman saw the type of player he could be. I believe that Hurney just happened to walk into a good situation created by Byrd and Gettleman.

To be clear I'm speaking to this season in particular. I know Byrd was green around the gills so to speak early on when we first signed him. That's not even open for debate.

I also liked Gettleman, and I thought he did many good things here. But he also tried too hard to find gems via FA. You can't always turn rags into riches. He watched Ted Ginn walk out the door twice to the detriment of our offense while he tried to insert random jags into crucial roles. The second time proving to be quite frankly a near catastrophic decision. He got too cute and was too smart for his own good, and that was ultimately his undoing as a GM. We need better than both him and Hurney.

If you think I'm blaming someone for injuries you misread the post entirely.

Don't want to put words in your mouth.  I read it as our GM/Coach did not have enough depth at WR going in.  It is difficult in a salary cap league to put big money on your 4-6th receiving options.  These guys really are not expected to see the field much.  Guys like Shepherd and Bersin are mostly going to play special teams.  To me, losing Webb and his flexibility was more disappointing than letting Ginn and his dick-fingers walk.

I really do not see what the big deal is.  Losing Byrd sucks, but it means more opportunities for CMC.  I'm fine with that.  Good things usually happen when he has the ball.

As long as you're satisfied with maintaining the status quo, this is what you're going to get.

Good grief some of you guys are shellshocked. You expect to have to make chicken salad out of chicken poo because of front office missteps. Nevermind that we've been doing that just about every year since we drafted Cam. It's okay to want more. Stop groveling and making excuses.

You sound more like a Brown fan than a fan of a team 11-4 and going to the playoffs for the 4th time in the past 5 years.

It isn't just about Byrd. We're talking body of work. And through 2 different GM's the last several years this franchise has lacked the basic foresight to build a WR core with adequate depth.

Or maybe you give them too much credit and they actually made a mistake.

For all the poo people give Hurney, and I don't want him as GM, I doubt he let's Ginn walk if it were up to him.

What does it tell you when it takes Marty Hurney of all people to finally give Byrd his chance to shine?

He's actually right. Gettleman had nothing to do with the depth chart. Neither does Hurney. In fact, no GM in the league does.

Depth charts and playing time fall solely under the responsibility of the head coach.

Were walking right into that fire, knowingly. If this is who they go into the playoff game against the Saints, you can expect an 18-39 type game from Cam, with 2 or 3 INT’s. We know Cam. He’s going to try and make plays, and unfortunately, this receiving group is limited.

Were going to have to get a God-like performance from him, where he throws for 250 and rushes for 80/90 yards

So you're saying, once again we're setting Cam up to failure?

And we can't expect Shula to come up with a game plan to counter or anticipate any of this. Speaking of game plans, the offensive game plan against Tampa was one of the worse I've ever seen.

Tampa doubled Olsen, and shaded coverage over to Funchess, and Shula had nothing for it. As if that's something new.

I don't understand it either. It's truly baffling.

I think the previous guy had a "build through the draft" mentality. Not necessarily wrong but we just don't do an exceptional job of drafting at that position. I will say that Gettleman appears to have had much better success drafting WR's than we have typically had. I realize that is also kind of sad.

Woof. Injuries and trades certainly played a part in this unit but that right there is why every playoff game will be an uphill battle. Teams will sell-out to stop the run, put their best corner on Funchess, and one of three WR’s who wouldn’t be on many other rosters in the NFL are going to have to play out their minds and step up. Need to address this position in free agency in a big way this off-season. That is ugly.

We have Olsen and McCaffery at least. As a three-pronged threat, Funchess, Olsen, and McCaffery are better than what we've had in a while.

It's very sad. I also think it's because this franchise just doesn't value the offensive side of the ball.
