Playoffs Question...

People make a lot out of "playoff experience" this time of year but I've always wondered if talent, health, scheme, and mismatches have more to do with it.

Tell me what y'all think and why. I made it so you could choose more than one if you think it's a combination.

Think it's a combination.   Using the cheatriots for example. 

They have a lot of playoff experience, 

But they don't in my opinion have the best talent level

They usually have some kind of key player injured but still manage with what they have. 

They usually take something you do well away from you,  or play well enough till you make the mistake (ie 28-3).

The mismatches they do have (Gronk) they exploit the fug out of them.

Almost every young upstart team with a young core young qb goes one and done.

Us in 2013 etc etc

They are exceptions such as Big been rookie year and Russell wilson but those teams had historic defenses.

Playoff experience is vital.

Every year we got to the playoffs we advanced farther. I believe we would do much better in a future superbowl

Number 1 and the Defense was the biggest reason we went to the Superbowl in 2015.  Talent makes a big difference

Lack of playoff experience was a HUGE factor in 2013 against the 49ers and is a huge factor for many teams every year. It will be in our benefit this year, and hopefully will be the difference, considering how evenly matched we are with the other teams.

Oh and luck.  Not the sucky QB in Indy kind, but the ball bouncing right back into your hands on the QB sneak kind.

Will it be enough against teams like the Saints and Rams who haven't been to the playoffs in years but have the kind of scheme/players that can dismantle our defense if we don't play out of our minds? Serious question.

 

Side question for everyone... how exactly does playoff experience make so much of a difference? Is it just about having the intestinal fortitude to toughen up and do what's gotta be done? Or are there specific things that experience gives you that can't be replaced another way?

If you don’t have your best players playing, you won’t go far.

Ask the Eagles if they would rather have experience or Wentz?

Playoff exp keeps players from being too hyped up to start the game and much less tight when the game is on the line. Playoff exp also keeps teams from doing boneheaded penalities that decide the game.

Limited number of teams and tons of media focus.  Young players who havent been there before might let things go to thier head.  Looking back at 2015, how we dealt with the media before the Superbowl showed our lack of Superbowl experience.  Next time we will be more focused.

  I've gone for other though I agree that all of these things are factors in playoff success. I just made a thread where I point out the giveaway/takeaway improvement and I think it will be a big deal. I also think showing a capability to make plays in ST is a huge edge in tight games.

Experience is important but the Bengals are probably the most experienced playoff team in the league other than New England and it never helped them much.
