Do I have to much faith in Cam?

Cam is an average-at-best passer, but a great QB once you add in the ground game. Moreover, he’s streaky when throwing the ball — if he gets hot and that part of his game comes together, he could easily lead the Panthers through a wide-open NFC.

Cam is a relatively inaccurate passer and really always has been. It seems as though his innacuracy has gotten worse the last couple of years. He hovers at or below 60%.

If the Panthers can't successfully run the ball (with many of the yards coming from him) they tend to lose and to so in an ugly fashion.

The reality is that the Panthers are only scoring, on average, 22.7 points per game and their defense gives up 20.4 points per game. There is simply not much margin for error. Quite honestly, this differential does not bode well in the playoffs where teams tend to have a greater points scored to points allowed differential.

Maybe a positive streak will begin next week. The Giants did this a few years back and ended as a Super Bowl champions. I won't hold my breath.

I also worry about the long-term viability of Cam. These hits that he takes as a runner simply can't be sustained at the current level. At some point they will be his kryptonyte.

It appears that the Panthers recognized that without Cam's running and/or the threat thereof this offense stutters significantly. Their attempt to make him more of a pocket passer failed miserably. What does the future hold.....

Actually he has one of the best deep balls I've ever seen.

Short to mid range I would agree he is more average but our lack of a speedy WR that can actually run routes and get open is hampering our offense as much or more than the lack of running game.

He throws a good deep ball for sure (and can fit balls into closer spaces with velocity and release most other QBs can’t match), but I still am unconvinced that his overall passing toolkit is, on the whole, better than league average. The physical aspects are there (and then some), but at the end of the day you’ve got to make the throws.

Fortunately for the Panthers, when you can make the plays he can on the ground, average passing efficiency still means an excellent QB.

He's been streaky but overall he's proven he can make pretty much any throw you ask. There were high throws yesterday and a few bad decisions but there looked to be an unusual amount of miscommunication even with Olsen, and trotting out arguably the worst group of wide receivers in the NFL didn't help either.

I'm trying to argue in good faith with you here but I can't really do that if you're going to talk about making the throws while overlooking the fact we have nothing but practice squad players in our WR core outside Devin Funchess. You give Matt Ryan that WR group with no run game to speak of and then try to talk to me about making the throws.

Same amount of have had for years....

also, I basically can tell before halftime if “good Cam” showed up.  Good Cam of course is the one who masks all our issues and still thrives.  If he doesn’t show early....he don’t show late

He completed 59% of his passes for an 80.7 QB rating this season (and was #2 leaguewide in interceptions) — I’m controlling for his subpar receiving options when I call him an average passer. If you go just by raw numbers w/o context, it’s hard to argue he’s even that.

Absolutely agree that he “can make any throw,” he just doesn’t do it with the regularity required for me to deem him a good passing QB. You disagree, and that’s fine.
