Holy hell that was the most depressing thing I've ever read.

Seeing as they're planning to release the movie version during Christmas, I fully expect people offing themselves in the theater bathroom.

Ugh, I wish I could unread that book.

just read a synopsis...I think I will pass

This book doesn't make you cry. This book crushes your soul with despair.

I wish I could have cried.

Cormac McCarthy is a bummer to read. Some of his books are interesting, but it seems like the underlying theme of all of his books is that evil will always win out over good. I've only read his more recent stuff, but I hear his Western genre stuff is great, although similarly dark/disturbing.

And they've already effed up the movie by crowbarring in a larger part for the role of the wife just b/c it's Charlize Theron.

I am sure if there were a disaster of the magnitude of the one in the book, things would get pretty bad pretty quick, but I don't think there would be roving bands of cannibals in the span of only 10 years.

10 years is a little long

The Road is great, but you can take what you want from the ending. Some see it as hopeful, some see it as another sign of mankind's impending extinction.

If you liked it, though, and you also like Westerny stuff, I'd recommend "Blood Meridian." Someone mentioned McCarthy's stuff is all about evil conquering good, and while I don't know if that's true, I do know Blood Meridian fits that description to a tee.

    • all of a sudden we have a crowded WR room but I'm pulling for him.  Good kid, went to Socastee High, near Myrtle Beach, then to Clemson and I think really surprised everyone that he got drafted and did well. Fun player to watch too.  Hope he makes it.  I expect Thielen to retire after this season, Hunter could be a good replacement.
    • Everyone wants to know what happened to Hunter Renfrow. He went from the Pro Bowl in 2021 to an afterthought in 2022 and 2023 to out of the league in 2024.  Renfrow ow is attempting a comeback with the Panthers. “It’s just trying to get back, trying to get healthy, trying to do something I love,” Renfrow told Darin Gantt of the team website when asked about a year out of the game. “I enjoyed other parts of life. We had our second daughter, so enjoying that and just wanting to make sure if I’m going to come back and give my time and attention to something that I was going to be all in on it.” Renfrow, 29, revealed that he has dealt with a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis, which left him with weight loss, fatigue and high fever. It’s a reason he did not play last season. Instead, Renfrow spent a year consulting with doctors and getting the condition under control. “It kicked my butt pretty good,” Renfrow said. “Last year, I fluctuated in weight. I went down to 150 pounds. I had like seven straight days of 103-degree fevers. It’s tough to play when you’re not feeling great.” He now weighs 187 with a goal of a playing weight of 185. “It’s a weird feeling. It makes you grateful for the times that you do feel good,” Renfrow said. “It makes you grateful for the opportunities that you’ve had, and when you feel like you’ve been blessed with some skill to go out there and perform, it makes you not want to waste the opportunity that you have. And that was one of the reasons why I wanted to come back and play.” In five seasons, Renfrow has 269 receptions for 2,884 yards and 17 touchdowns. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/hunter-renfrow-a-health-challenge-led-to-time-away-from-football
