Golic says Norwell will break the bank this off-season

I’d rather not pay 2 G’s big money especially if the team feels Moton could do a nice job there next season

This is a good point.  Of all the backups we have Moton is probably the next starter on this team.   I love Norwell and hope we keep him but if they do let him walk I think Moton might step in and do a good job.

If it's between Norwell and Star

Bye Star

I'm moving more and more towards this line of thinking as well. Preseason, I was firmly on team Star, because good guards are easier to find than good DT's, but Norwell is proving himself to be elite. I assume that Hurndog finds a way to keep them both (even if it bites us in the ass later).

There is a lot to digest with this one.

Is Kalil going to stick around, or retire?  That may have something to do with how we perform in the playoffs, and how healthy he truly is.  We won't really be able to make moves on Norwell or Star's contracts until we know that.

What I mean...I don't want Larsen or a rookie C in there with a new guard....possibly a rookie guard.  If they think Moton can transition to G, so be it, but we won't be privy to that info.  If Kalil decides to play one more year, then it's easier to let Norwell walk, or franchise tag him...Kalil can help cover up a new/rook G.

Any other position, and I'm trying to sign Star, and tag Norwell...but for whatever the hell reason the NFL considers all offensive linemen to be the same, as far as pay for the tag....Centers, Tackles, Guards, all make the same...and it's more than 14M...which we likely can't afford.

What sucks is if it really is JUST choosing one between Norwell and Star, I think our defense suffers without Star in there, even if its just depth. Kyle Love isn't every down, he could retire, Vernon Butler is erratic, might could say has a bigger upside than Star but Star has did the dirty, put fear into O lines and been pretty damn consistent. He really helps our linebackers, when he gets doubled team the other team has a big running game.

I don't see how some of these teams have all this talent and get to always keep their players, we develop players and ship them away, yet we don't have a "stacked" team or mad depth.

Thomas davis was about to be out. We have a healthy Luke, MAYBE Shaq, can you see the difference between Ben Jacobs and Thomas Davis out there in crucial games?

Its a tough gig for the GM no doubt.

They don't.

And we do have some really really good players on our roster...that means much of our cap is at the very top of the roster.

KK, Turner, Olsen, Cam, Kalil 1, Star, Addison.  Those guys alone make up more than 44% of our cap space.

Toss in Peppers and Stew, and you are over 50%.

CJ, captain, Stewart will all be gone. We can keep both star and Norwell

I agree.  I also wonder about Ryan Kalil's health and contract situation.  There is some meat on the bone to cut and improve for sure.

You keep your core and upside. Hurney, however, had a history of using contracts to reward past performance.  He overpaid for over-the-hill players.

Davis?  Kalil?  Munnerlyn?  Stewart?  All his players.  I am nervous.

There's an old adage that you pay for tackles and you train up guards. There's some wisdom in it, for sure, but who wants to see Norwell not just walk but show up against us in the future?

I think it is all going to depend on what Norwell wants more than anything. There's a chance he could offer a hometown discount, but in all reality there could be millions more dollars out there waiting for him than we'd be willing, or able, to pay him. A difference of a couple of million per year is an amazing amount of money and it would be hard for any smart person to turn it down.

I agree...we have to protect our QB.  I am tired of this team settling for mediocrity on the OL.  With Williams playing well, locking up Norwell will ensure we have 4 very good starters.  Leaves only one spot to fill along the line in the draft (unless Moton is that guy).

We save over 7 million by cutting Stew and CJ.  No brainers really.  The tough decision will be Ryan Kalil.  We can save another 7 million by cutting him.  But if he finishes this season strong and the run game continues to improve, it will make for a tough decision for Hurney.

Vern isn't a NT, he plays the same spot as KK.

Yep.

I think when Vern was drafted, G-Man may have thought that he wouldn't be able to retain KK because of the premium price for elite pass rushers at that position. Now that KK has been given a contract extension, we really don't have a true 4-3 NT on the roster besides Starr.

In hindsight we should have drafted a possible replacement for Starr instead. If we let him go in the offseason the run defense will suffer unless we find a stud in the draft or find a solid veteran in the off season. Norwell has been solid this year but I think he's easier to replace than Starr.
