Mark Cuban Not Interested In Buying Panthers

I'm wondering how much a possible CTE lawsuit will scare away bidders.

The owners don't lose money from the CTE lawsuits.... why does this continue to pop up? The NFL pays the settlements.. not the owners.

Also, there is no way to prove CTE is directly caused by football. As unfortunate as it sounds, for there to be a lawsuit to be upheld you would have to 100% undeniably prove that CTE is a direct affect from football.

The only lawsuit that could stand would be against the NFLPA not offering the best of insurance. Which is why we have all of these lockouts.

CTE is a non issue for owners. Consider it relative to owning an industry with blue collar workers and accidents happen on the job, and workman's comp has to be paid out. That's how it is seen by the owners.

Something tells me JR runs his business with the "good ol' boy network." That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if he already has a deal in place to sell to someone in his circle: the Belks, Wordsworths, or Levines. I'd be shocked if a celebrity consortium buys the team. I also don't see much changing if one of these families take over.

This wouldn't surprise me at all. I think he may have worked out a deal a while back. i think they knew this stuff that came out was coming for a while. I don't think it was s surprise to them at all.

The city of Charlotte really really wants someone local, and it sounds like they're willing to do whatever they have to in order to help that happen. A new local owner might be able to get some seriously nice incentives.

Kinda makes me wonder if the state will join in on that effort.

Cuban couldn't have bought the Panthers anyway without screwing up his NBA ownership situation.

Ever think JR is selling the organization now, not because of the scandal, but because there is going to be a limited window on the major tax breaks he will be entitled to thanks to the current GOP scheme. It can literally mean $100 million in the sale gets to stay in his family's pockets rather than evaporate into taxes. JR might live a few more years but the tax scheme is probably gone after the mid-term elections and there might even be punitive higher taxes or a move to treat capital gains as regular taxable income.

The scandal actually makes it just a quicker sale and a quicker approval of the sale by the rest of the NFL owners (since they have final say). It might shave a few million off the original price tag, but the tax savings are going to be huge. JR has teams of tax attorneys and CPAs working on this and I think they're playing to the market.

Honestly, I thought about the accusations being a bit of a red herring...maybe the plan was to sell the team in the offseason anyway, and this is just a way to speed it up....hadn't really thought about the tax issue...but there could be some legs there.

I do believe the accusations, but I also think that JR may have been ready to sell anyway.  Either health, boredom, money, internal struggles, etc...or possibly, JR thinks this is the top of the market.

It certainly helps him, but the catalyst for this was an investigation by outside journalists.

I'll grant someone may have pointed that out to him while they were discussing options.

I think this has been on the table much longer than the accusations have.

I'm leaning that way too.

JR gets rid of the GM and team President...new majority owner can pick his guys, and the new GM can decide what to do with the coaching staff.

    • It will be interesting to see who is still available at #4.  There could be a player someone drastically needs and will be willing to give up a nice haul to get him.  Getting an extra round one pick in 2026 would be nice.
    • First of all, I think we should fix as many areas as possible other than QB going into 2025.  Young has played well the 2nd half of the season and needs more evaluation.   I think DL should be our focus whether it is Graham or Carter with our 1st pick. I wouldn't be sad if we used our 2nd round pick on another D-Lineman.  It will be much easier to get a WR on a one- or two-year free agent contract than to pick a WR that could be JAG.  This also gives XL and Coker another year to develop.  Our free agent picks in 2024 for the D-Line were, IMO, designed to complement Brown.  Once Brown went out those players were mediocre.  We need to have insurance in case Brown comes back and doesn't perform to his pre-injury play.  Sadly, I think we should move on from Evero.  He doesn't seem to have the heart for this team.
