An offensive playcalling concern

There's been discussion about the playcalling, but I haven't seen one particular aspect that emerged from this Sunday addressed yet. It's not so much about the plays being called in this case as it is the pace at which they're being called. Something that happened, if I remember correctly, in the first half, has me wondering.

There was a timeout called because the play clock had run low, and Delhomme came to the sideline looking hot. The focus of his anger was OC Jeff Davidson. If you read Delhomme's face, it appeared he was upset that the playcall was slow coming in. So slow, in fact, that the offense didn't have time to line up and execute.

That incident got me wondering if this has happened other times this season. If so, it could be a sign that Davidson is having confidence and/or decision making issues of his own.

That said, I haven't gone back and reviewed tape to look for times when Davidson might have been slow to call a play, so I can't say anything for sure. This could be an isolated incident, but to be certain, I plan to watch for this sort of thing in future games.

Hopefully, it is isolated. If not, it's one of those things that all too often happens at the wrong time.

Might just be a storm in a tea cup, the play calling last year for the most part was very good. The team has just been lacking in execution in many areas this year and the turnovers are killing us.

Maybe it was slow getting out, maybe there was a microphone issue, there's a few tousand things it could be.

It's easy to call the right plays when your team is playing at a high level, which they were last year. Now the rest of the NFL has caught on to what the Panthers are doing, and we've been facing defenses that are a little better at stopping the run. In other words, it's time for Davidson to start earning the big bucks we pay him. So far I'm not sure he has.

I know that was a sorry call on 4th down to try to make them jump offsides in order to get the 1st down, when they only had to move the ball a few inches.

one problem it could be is where davidson is during the game. i like the idea of having the OC on the field with the rest of the guys but i don't think that is the best vantage point.

another could be fox getting in the middle of those decisions instead of letting the OC take care of business. if fox is feeling the heat rise under his seat he could be even more involved, whatever the call was, it wasn't the right one because it didn't get the job done.

whose fault is that?

it could be davidson's fault but then ultimately it's fox/hurney's fault because they aren't managing very well the resources they chose to bring in to help.

it could be fox's fault for holding davidson back and putting the team in a box. look at the difference between henning's playcalling here and in miami. it isn't remotely the same.

whatever it is, it falls on fox's head.

I am really starting to think the players are starting to take over the team because they don't trust the coaches anymore. It's like they know the coaches won't be here next year, but we (players) will be, so why not try and save this sinking ship while we can.

the commentators talked about that very play saying Jeff needs to get them in quicker. who knows what the problem was.

I got a scanner I use to use for a wide range of things,if you know what chips to solder in you can hear any conversation.I put a chip in that were for some cell phones and carried it to the games in 05,and it picked up the helmet radio.Most of the things you hear are the plays,sometimes they'll be telling each other things,like missed reads,we need to run that again and i'll do different on that ,or whatever they have time to say in that brief time.Then the next thing I know,they wouldn't let me bring it in the stadium anymore.They told me I couldn't take a device in like that anymore

Yeah, I noticed that too. Im not positive, but Fox stays away from Davidson for the most part. They had at least three guys working to get the play in on that play. There was Davidson, Moore and McCown (was Feeley in there?). Not to mention the Jake. I think Davidson was nervous like the rest of the team. They really wanted to win.

That was not a sorry call...it was a good move.

Every fan wants their team to go for it on 4th and short....EVERY TEAM'S FANS. However, not making it in that area of the field can have huge negative impacts on the game.

The 5 yds that we took on the penalty actually assisted in the punt. And, there was a chance we could get them to jump offsides.

With the way our OLine is getting owned, I don't like our chances of actually lining up and going for it right now.

How about Davidson starts getting the plays called in earlier?

I've noticed that being an issue at several times this season so far...

Every fan wants their team to go for it on 4th and short....EVERY TEAM'S FANS. However, not making it in that area of the field can have huge negative impacts on the game.

The 5 yds that we took on the penalty actually assisted in the punt. And, there was a chance we could get them to jump offsides.

With the way our OLine is getting owned, I don't like our chances of actually lining up and going for it right now.

Carolina was 0-3 and Albert Haynesworth was just removed from the game. That was an ideal situation to let this so called running team get a 1st down.
