A popular idea is that there will be a fairly significant time jump for the next movie.

Yup that's what I'm saying.    The end scene was showing force sensitive kids popping up.    I expect some new Jedi and young recruits next movie, it only makes sense.    The rebellion is not even close to fighting back.    They need those people that sent messages to to step up (Luke's legend will influence this) and they need new Jedi.

Was going to see it today and then I read IMBD user reviews and its getting killed by a lot of people. Is it really this bad?

I am not a huge Star Wars fanboy. Have seen all the movies (although I couldnt name them)  but don't get all into the characters, story lines, etc like many people do. Am I even going to know what the Hell is going on or enjoy the film?

If you want good reviews ignore IMDB.  RT or Metacritic is better.

I hope Snoke stays dead, the point of the movie in that regard was to get Kylo Ren to be in charge of the First Order by intimidating Hux. He's not a wild kid now, he's a scary and pissed off adult. But like before, the more you tighten your grip the more star systems will slip through your fingers as they say.

This movie is meant to be viewed with Yoda's quote about failure being the best teacher as the overarching theme. Everyone in this movie fails. Rey fails at turning Kylo. Kylo fails at turning Rey. Snoke fails at everything. Luke fails Kylo. Poe's heroic plans don't work twice. Finn and Rose fail at getting the decryption. etc.

Also I think I'm one of like 3 people that actually enjoyed Rose, and enjoyed her and Finn's story. It wasn't perfect but I was really surprised at the backlash of that.

I almost feel like there is an anti-phantom menace backlash occurring. When people walked out of the phantom menace a lot of people were saying that was great, and it wasn't until later that the hive mind of hate started. I'm not defending phantom menace but it almost seems like people are more interested in being on the "right" side of history. Hating a film now gives you the ability to years later sneer and say "told ya so!"

Which brings me to my next point of fans having to be "right" and how fan theories are really destroying these movies. A ton of the disappointment I've read online stems from one single problem: the movie didn't go how you expected it to. Rey didn't have mysterious parents, Snoke didn't have a mysterious backstory, Finn and Poe weren't flashy heroes, ........which is really the point of the film. But so many people missed that.

ESB was made with the idea in mind that this would be our heroes low point. They got a miraculous victory in the New Hope, but then the empire absolutely crushes them in the next.

Reading stuff online (wasn't alive then) it seems like ESB was initially received poorly, but after ROJ tied the plot together people were able to appreciate the risks ESB took.

I have a funny feeling TLJ will end up being looked fondly upon after this saga is complete. I could definitely be wrong.

ESB was not received poorly LOL but yeah people were not happy they had to wait three years for the end. They were pissed off about things like Ewoks. Empire was better in most regards other than novelty than the original. To have the big battle set piece at the start of the movie was a risky choice but it made it great.

I wish we learned about snoke more. We pretty much know nothing about him except he’s really old, from past the outer rim and turned kylo. We don’t know how he got control of the empire, how he met kylo,  anything really. That was frustrating. I’m not so mad that he died because kylo is the main villain of the series but I just wish we got to know alittle more.

not mad at Luke’s “death” because it’s not really a death.

Im mad the short lightsaber battles where underwhelming.

I would say it was about the same at TFA, maybe slightly better, but definitely not behind ESB

Saw it today finally. I read the spoilers, read the reviews, and read forum threads going in.

I loved it. Second favorite behind ESB.

All you "nostalgia guys" need to watch it again ... but as a movie. Not as the Space Opera you saw as a kid and formed a bond with. As a film, though a tad long, it's quite wonderful.

The middle part everyone hates actually wasn't bad at all. True, they didn't break the code, but the actual story of that act worked very well. Finn and Rose made friends and had a great adventure, Del Toro played a great character, we got to see a fun world we'd never seen before with stuff we'd never seen before, and the whole thing was different than anything in any previous film. It simply worked.

Luke stole the damn show with Ren not far behind. Kylo is supposed to be an emotional mess, guys. Driver can act his ass off. Kylo Ren is a great character. GREAT. The sequences with him and Rey were special. He is going to be a great villain going forward. And even Hux was great this time around.

The space battles were on point, the CGI was super good, and though he died too quickly ... Snoke came off as a big time wielder of power. Dude had skills.

Only complaints: Dern was way too stiff and ... kids ... ugh. They just can't act. Luckily we saw very little of them.

    • A male lion will beat a tiger even though the tiger will have 1/3 more body weight. Male Lions' fight to kill, tigers won't fight.  A male lion will never stop coming, a tiger will quit immediately.  Male Lions exist only to kill.  Tigers are hunters.    Male Lions are absolutely relentless.   Do a deep dive on lions vs. tigers - look specifically for comments by animal trainers from the early 20th century. A lion vs. a bear?  That's a good question.   Bears don't have an off switch either - and they have more natural defenses.  I'd take a grizzly or polar but I don't know about a standard black bear.
