Interesting Article, Gettleman vs Reese Drafts

Dave tries to get too cute with the dumpster dives, money ball approach to football and over drafting guys a round or more early many times.

He did push the coaching to do better with what they have and make accommodations to get lesser players more involved, fixed a seriously bad cap situation, and of course 3 playoff appearances including a Super Bowl appearance and some dominant defenses.

however the want to get too cute bit him and the Panthers and he tried to go too far ala chip kelly about taking the hardline with Fan favorites and corps players.

getting too cute was his undoing.

Unless, I'm mistaken, no one on this board knows why he was fired. Did that information come out and I miss it? As far as I knew, there was still silence as to why DG was fired...officially.

Doubt he got fired for being too cute... For fugs sake, he didn't draft Armani Edwards...

JR did it Mafia style. No one knows what happened, or how it happened. I am sure it is a "don't ask too many questions" type of situation for insiders. One day you are GM of the year, next day ... bye

Playing money ball with Jordan gross, Steve smith, ted Ginn twice, josh Norman, to be followed by Olsen and TD etc.

cute was tongue in cheek, apologies if the need to spell everything out is your thing.

I don't think they need more of the same if they're trying to right that ship for the future. When you factor in Gettleman's penchant for attempting to replace quality starters in key roles with jags from the bottom of other teams rosters, it doesn't look like a very good pairing long term. None of this is even mentioning the matter of his at times iffy approach in managing personnel, which makes the idea of him dealing with OBJ almost laughable.

this article is proof that you can’t depend on building through the draft. it’s such an overrated metric to judge player evaluators. the only way you can judge is by their total body of work. the players they brought in as free agents, the value with which they got those players, the skill sets they were looking for, etc. also, i can’t agree with all of the analysis. odell beckham is definitely more talented than benjamin of course, but i wouldn’t say that he “didn’t pan out” here.

if you compared reese’s drafts with belichick’s you’d probably find that there wasn’t a major difference either. but while gettleman was maximizing the potential of the panthers during his tenure, reese was building teams that couldn’t function well enough to make the playoffs for 4 years in a row.

Sounds about right. Neither knew what draft talent looked like if it were to slap them in the face...

I still think Gettleman did an outstanding job of getting the team out of cap hell, but once he did, instead of trying to sign decent-good players on fair value contracts, he continued to shop at Dollar Tree for players. Gettleman also had a cutthroat type of business about him that probably didn't get him any support.

They do business a little differently in New York than they do in North Carolina.

The clearest thing we've learned from both Dave Gettleman and Bill Polian is that if we want a GM to work well with Jerry Richardson, he can't handle things like a yankee would.
