is there a metric for that or is it just a number you've pulled out of the air

I posted the article in another thread about a month ago. It's somewhere on here, but yes its an accurate number. The article is basically breaking down how hard it is to hit on a 1st round pick. I believe it was written by Forbes.

How much different would that new dimension be if we signed Woodhead or Burkhead or any other readily available pass-catching RB. There is a good reason these “important” pieces to any offense only make 4M a year, at most. And then drafted a legit top 10 pick?

 McCaffrey was not my choice.

With that being said, neither of the two players that you mentioned are as good of a receiver as McCaffrey.

I've been a football fan way too long to judge a a draft pick by his rookie campaign, regardless of where they were drafted.

Maybe? Won’t argue against it but the gap is small. But you would have to give them the edge running the ball, at this point. And both could have been had for 4M or less. Not a top ten pick. How about James White? Reddick? Vereen? You will notice where theses guys went in the draft and current salaries.

I’ve been watching since 1975. One thing I learned long ago was you don’t take a RB in the first who is not capable of being an every down back. And until I see otherwise .....  he isn’t one.

I agree that you don't draft a RB top 10 at all.

He was not drafted to be an every down back for us. Any expectation of that will be met with complete disappointment regardless of how good of a career he has.

We are paying CMC 3.1million this year.  I was incorrect about burkhead, I left out his receiving yards. Apologies.

By your logic, woodhead would have been a wasted FA signing. If you want to use the excuse "he has been hurt all year" doesn't change the fact he has done nothing this year. Now if you are telling me that we could draft a kid at #8 and pay him less than 4mil per season and he would be good for a 1000 yards..... What kind of GM would say no to that?

Lastly, we are at a point where the value of a player isn't where he was drafted, but whether or not he was productive. Only 21% of total 1st round picks make it, and well CMC is part of that 21% so far.

He isn't the first "athlete" to go in the top ten and he isn't the last.

A 1000 YFS RB is not hard to find. You think any GM would trade a shutdown corner, or an elite free safety, or a Solid DE for a RB who could only get 1000 YFS. 23 RBs did it last year. Not a goal to shoot for if you’re a top ten pick.

So what is so wrong about saying it? People lose it like you just said their son was only the 3rd best player in his Little League.

Our gameplan is always so random. You go into it KNOWING we are going to try to run the ball, but it's a toss up between creative runs and misdirection or just forcing A gaps for 80% of the day. Shula rarely makes calls that seem purposeful and more by accident. He tries to outsmart himself. So when it comes to CMC, it is the same. One week, we're designing little gadget plays to him, and then we don't the next. We need to spread the defenses out more, and we need to let our speed setup the strength of this offense. CMC is best utilized when he is unpredictable. His biggest game this season was a combination of inside and outside runs, screens, short passes and a deeper pass as well. He is his own meta game. We don't need to force it to him, but we do need to mix it up some with him. Let him run that wheel route from a trips set. Let him just run up the seam to open up Olsen or Funch underneath. As it stands, teams know CMC is getting the ball on a read option or a pass in the flat. To use that assumption against opponents only makes sense...which of course means we won't do it.

I'm just saying that CMC has been big for our offense. Which is true.

His impact has helped us win games. Which is also true.

His.impact as a rookie, has been very good for this team.

One could argue that makes it worth his pick.

I would argue many other RBs could have had the same impact given the same opportunities as CMC.

My point im trying to convey is that McCaffrey would have much better stats and many more yards of he got the touches for it. 12 touches a game just doesnt compare to the 25-30 touches a game Lev Bell, Zeke, Fournette, Gurley , and the like get. People are comparing him to players that get 2x or more than 2x as many opportunities than he does to get more yards.

If they knew they were going to use him sparingly...he shouldn’t have been the 8th overall pick.

A 4th/5th round RB can get 10 touches a game just fine without sinking that type of investment into that player.

The story of CMC’s season just shows how weird this coaching staff is.

Who is the elite free safety that was available at #8 or defensive lineman?

We all know about lattimore. However,  Cb wasn’t not a position of need.

23 starting running backs?

or only some of them. I’d like to compare snap count.

Regardless, we won’t agree with each other. I think what you are asking for is extremely far fetched and unrealistic. You are not even appreciating the product this team has put together for us fans. We have. 9-4 team that is one game out of the #2 seed. Yet, you ridicule the decisions that were made. I think it is fair to say that we don’t win a game or two with cmc.

bc you know who would have done his job.... Whitaker....do you think defenses would have even cared about that?
