Its rare that defensive ends look good rushing the passer in their rookie season.

Look at the NFL alltime sack leaders.

Strahan 1 sack his first year.

Bruce Smith had 6.5.

Reggie White had 13, but that was after 2 years in the USFL.

Chris Doleman had .5 sacks.

For whatever reason, defensive end seems to be a position in which experience counts.

Not that I think Brown is going to be in the same league as those guys, but it will take him a couple of years to learn the ropes.

He might not get hella sacks this year, but he fits our scheme to get pressure and close the pocket. But honestly...

I WANT MORE JOHNSON

I do too...just not enough snaps..to go around now..thats why next year i think Brayton will not be resigned....or at least he will be a backup

I liked the fact that we actually moved Brayton and Johnson to the inside at the DT positions with Pep and Brown on the outside on several of the passing downs... Definitely created more pressure, and I hope we stick with that game plan the rest of the year. I was wondering why we weren't doing more of this on passing downs to generate more pass rush being that we weren't blitzing.

I've been hard on Brown too, but I had to give him his props for yesterday. The games I watched him before, he was consistently getting tied up and his play was over. Yesterday, everytime I saw him, he was getting pressure on the QB. Not only did he notch the sack/FF, but I know at least 1 or 2 other times that his initial pressure allowed someone else to get the sack.

Not sure if it was Pep's first sack or someone else's, but I know Brown caused it.

he'll get stronger now all he has is football and doesn't have to juggle classes and limited work time, then he'll be a beast when his strength catches up to his speed

Really thats what he needs. If he can bulk up and keep his speed he will be very effective as a DE. Too bad he prob will only have a year under Meeks.

his spin move was impressive. in preseason, he would spin when right in front of an OL and would simply spin in place so when he came out, he was still right in front of the OL. this time, he spun away from the OL and was able to move forward to the QB. very nice improvements since preseason. i still feel he wasn't worth next year's first. we will be needing it too badly but i am sure fox and hurney pretty much felt like this season was do or die so they would worry about next year when it got here and if they were still here.

We also go Goodson in the deal. Brown + Goodson = Top 10 pick? Probably. We'll see who the 49s pick in April, but I'm thinking I'd rather have Brown and Goodson over just about anyone they could get.

it's not who they get that matters, it's who we could have gotten at their position that would have made the difference. they might go in a different direction than we would have. based on how we are playing, we most likely will finish with a top 10 or 12 pick in the draft which means we could have gotten a top DT. now we have to wait until the second round unless something changes in the offseason.

Brian Baker has really helped our Dline with there moves. I even saw Brayton do a spin move to get by and I was like wow. As said before we got Brown and Goodson and they both have loads of potential and both are very young. I would say it would be more Fox then Hurney. I dont see Hurney losing his job this season with his record and management with contracts.
