In a worst-case scenario, is Rivera safe?

All of you that think JR is happy with mediocrity need to look back to the Fox era.  Fox got nine seasons here, and was basically fired after year eight but had to work out his contract.  In those eight years he had three winning records and two years when we went 8-8.

Rivera is in his seventh year now.  He's had two winning seasons and this would be his third.  He's arguably had a lot more talent to work with as well.

Why will JR be more patient with Rivera than he was with Fox?

He’s a lot older now

if he cares, Shula and that whole offensive staff will be gone

That last name though. History and the shield

Coach didn’t flub a punt, fumble a punt, grab a face mask, blow an offsides call, hit a guy out of bounds

he didn’t draft Shaq, KB, or Vern or let josh go either

easily.

they aren't going to fire a 2 time COY because of a 9-7 season.  Rivera isn't great.  But are we sure we could bring in better?

Saints loss to me I put more on player execution than coaching.

I think people miss this point, who would come here and instantly be better?  Rivera didn't just luck into Coach of the Year, twice.  Are there some major issues?  Absolutely, but is this a full dumpster fire like the Giants?  Nope.  We are still 8-4 with the ability to get ourselves into the playoffs.

Now if Rivera loses out and goes 8-8, then I think there are some serious discussions to be had.  I didn't get a chance to watch the Saints game, but after reading up, it looks like this was more of a 70-30 loss: 70 % player errors, 30 % coaches.  This was a game we had a chance to win, but there were enough errors to lose this one.

Let's not forget that NO isn't some patty cake team.  They are beatable, but when you can't either completely stifle them OR keep up, it's going to be a long day.  The team has to get better and play better, and that falls on the coaches and the players.

I'm so torn on this one. I agree that often times it feels like Jerry Richardson and the Panthers organization act like they're just happy we have a team and want the fans to feel the same. However. In 23 seasons the Panthers have been to 4 NFC Championship Games and 2 Super Bowls. Better than half the time the team makes the Playoffs, they play for the Conference title and half of those times they win the Conference to go to the Super Bowl. That ain't half bad.

Look at the Eagles for example, since they're the soup du jour this season.  84 total seasons of football.  In the same 23 seasons of the Panthers existence the Eagles have 3 NFC titles and 0 Super Bowl wins, with 23 more wins and 24 fewer losses.  The Eagles are 11-12 in the playoffs again in our 23 seasons, while the Panthers are 9-7. Pretty similar, all the while the Panthers were an upstart in this stretch while the Eagles have 61 more years of establishment.

Say all that to say this.  I'm seriously pissed right now and thinking about selling my tickets which are awesome seats, for the rest of the year. But, while I'm pissed at the organization I can't lie myself that the results overall are pretty good.

I think both the coaching and the player execution has been bad. Coaches can deflect alot of the blame to failed gettleman moves and bad player execution and easily get away with it.

The only way we might get different coaches is if we lose out and go 8-8 . If we win even 1 more game they are 100% safe for at least 1 more season.

Lets just wait and see what happens. The off season can hold many suprises that none of us could see happening like staff firings including replacing RR, hiring an actual GM(not Hurnia), replacing Shula with a relevant useful OC and possibly a DC (if Wilkes leaves for a HC job). I know this may just be a dream turned nightmare but you never know what will happen

Given that he's a lot older he may feel more of a sense of urgency to get a title before his time.

Here's a thought that should keep some people up at night.  If the team siht's the bed and finishes 8-8 or 9-7 and JR decides that it's time for Rivera to go, who hires the next guy?  The same one who tapped Fox and Rivera for the job?  They were both Hurney hires, and even with a small sample size it sure looks like he as a "type" that he likes.

If that happens, it will sure seem like a missed opportunity, but it is what it is.

I honestly don't think winning is truly JR's focus.     We've had like 15 years of mediocre coaching and he brought back Hurney, who does this who really cares?   Who brings back a GM who was fired?   Who fires a GM after the draft lol.     He's completely fine with being a middle of the road team, maybe if we were 2-10 he'd care, but as long as it's .500 or around that, I don't think he cares one bit.
