Serious Question. Should We Go In On Our Run Game In The Draft?

I think it depends on how you define "going in on the run game". I think our current O-Line run blocking is so poor that Jim Brown would look ordinary running behind it. If Rivera is determined to be a run first team (in a pass oriented league) then he needs acquire some nasty maulers up front to open up some lanes. We need athletic guys who can get out in space from time to time so we wouldn't have to run between the tackle so much. This could help us control the clock, make our play action more effective, and keep the defense off of the field so much.

If we bring back both Kalil brothers, Norwell, Trai, and Darryl and expect to run the ball better next season then we're going to be disappointed.

I'd target the best run blocking centers and guards in the draft and do everything I could to acquire them if those needs haven't been addressed by the end of FA.

I'd also put Moton on the field more this season to see if he has the potential to hold down either one of the Tackle spots. If he can then I'd try to move M. Kalil in the offseason or at the end of 2018. Heck, I might would even try him a guard some just to see what he can do. We just need some guys who can create running lanes. If we could do that consistently I'm our current RB's would perform better.

McCaffrey isn't a running back of the future I agree, but I dont know about spending another high pick on a back. We'll be drafting in the middle of the round at best because we already won 8 games. Then you look at Kamara , Hunt, Jamaal Williams , Tarik Cohen, others from this year and Jordan Howard from last year, you really dont need to draft a back that early.

If we go offense in r1 I'd aim for the top OT prospect like McGlinchey or Orlando Brown from Oklahoma, or that kid from Texas Connor Williams. Theres at least 3 good tackles that we could have a shot at one of them . I'm tired of us having Oline problems.

We could actually draft from quite a # of positions this coming April. We have needs at OT, Saftey, CB, DE, WR. RB + TE are luxuries in my opinion but its possible we could pick those up too if the value is right.

Take away Cam's unorthodox running, and our run blocking and running game have been pretty bad for years.  That's coaching!  Until our coaches emphasize run blocking and design a running game around our actual running backs it doesn't matter who we have on the field.

For everyone already giving up on CMC as a runner, you need to remember that pretty much every RB will tell you that they need consistent carries and be able to get in a rhythm.  We have not done that for CMC all season.  We've only used him sparingly as a runner, and then we are running him as a power runner.  Again, that's not the player, it's coaching.  Design a scheme that fits what your players do best, and they might actually produce for you.  As good as Kamara looks for the Saints, he wouldn't look any better than CMC if he were here instead.  Payton has done a masterful job of putting him in a position to succeed, and plays him to his strengths.  Shula and Rivera are very old school, but CMC is a prototypical new school player.

damn what a fuging quote of truth. I think Gettleman had the right mindset in trying to get players with very different skillsets to try to turn the offense into a modern quick hitting , precise, and explosive offense. But its just the wrong system and coaching staff to do it with .

Its not just CMC that's being held back, our coaches have stifled the offense for years in numerous ways. Rivera treats all his teams like they have a great defense and wants a hard hitting, no risk taking, ball control offense that doesnt make mistakes while the defense does most of the legwork in stopping the other team, creating turnovers and short field for the offense to take atvantage of.
