Why was that not deemed a successful onside recovery by Funchess?

Elbow down: Check

Both hands on ball: Check

No part of body touching out of bounds: Check

Right after this he hits out of bounds.  That's when the play ends, the toss doesn't matter.  It is a possession recovery by Devin Funchess.

ARTICLE 7. PLAYER POSSESSION

Item 1. Player in Possession. A player is in possession when he is inbounds and has a firm grip and control of the ball with his hands or arms.

He had the ball in his hands before falling out of bounds.  He was clearly in possession since he was able to toss it to Jacobs.  And, the fact that it was even close should side with the call on the field.  NFL is so scripted.

This was exactly the discussion I was having with a friend while watching it live. We both disagreed with the call on the field since we felt he had possession and then landed out of bounds, which is where the play ended.

This is literally exactly what I pointed out live on the official gameday thread.  I don't think the refs even considered it which is BS

The argument could definitely be made that he had possession and an elbow down in bounds. Two hands securing the ball, elbow down then immediately slid out of bounds. This “1 second” nonsense is ridiculous or almost no toe tap in bounds would be “possession” when they catch and tap immediately then fall out of bounds.

I’m not too mad about this missed call though, considering the other bs that was going on during the game.  This one wasn’t nearly as blatant.

THE TOSS TO JACOBS DOESN"T MATTER.  HE"S OUT OF BOUNDS AT THAT POINTS>

What I'm saying is he had possession before he went out of bounds.

Ball is partly on the ground, Funchess does not have possession. Was a great attempt by a dude who did not have a good game.

So, you have to pick up the ball now?  He isn't trying to make a catch.  Only secure possession of the ball and all that takes is 2 hands firmly grasping it while any part of the body like an elbow touching in bounds.

With 2 hands while cradling it?  I mean c'mon.  There just isn't enough evidence to overturn that call.

A) The call was not that Funchess had possession it was that Carolina got possession because of the flip back to the LB.

B) The ball is partially on the ground, Funchess has it, at most, for a tenth of a second before he hits down out of bounds with two hands on the ball and the ball trapped against the ground.

C) This is getting ridiculous. That was clearly out of bounds and you're desperately reaching for someone to blame other than the Panthers for laying an egg at the most inopportune time.

Not while the ball is ON THE GROUND. Dear god. He grabs it while its on the ground for all of a tenth of a second and you wanna say he has possession? You'd be livid if the same thing happened against us and they called it possession.

What constitutes possession in your eyes?  He has to hold the ball for 1 seconds, 2 seconds?  Does it say that in the rulebook?
