Byrd's role?

As was pointed out earlier, if you are a wide receiver and your last name wasn't Funchess, you didn't catch a single pass this past Sunday during the game.

Let that sink in. CMC, Dickson and Olsen. Then only Funchess from the WR corps. Cam was having a horrible day as a passer thanks to that thumb, but still not one of the other WRs even caught one stinking pass.

Where is Byrd going to play? Heck, go ahead and put him at WR2, can't be any worse than what we saw from the rest of those guys. Clay had a stellar day as a PR and that was instrumental in the win, but that wasn't as a receiver.

Basically, the WR2 position is wide open right now, if anyone, including Byrd steps up, the job is their's. One friggin' catch is all it takes to be the best candidate. The bar can't be set any lower than that -- surely one of these guys can hop over it.

I think Clay might have better wheels than Byrd for those

you ride guys that have shown as well.  Clay got some confidence going.  That means something in this sport

Agreed. Wouldn't mind trying to get him a couple of looks with smoke screens, drag routes, etc. next week. Basically just try to get him the ball in space in a manner that doesn't require a great deal of route running precision and give him a change to turn it into a punt return type situation.

He hadn't but you have to take into account Cam with Byrd actually playing has had KB and Olsen & Fun last year and this year KB and Fun ahead of him getting most of the targets along with CMC this year there while he was active there really hasn't been a place for him in a Shula offense. Now that the lines been gelling and we actually need his production now would be the great judgement of what he has to offer. He's gained the weight last few years been in the system and has speed now we'll see if he has football moxy.

I would prefer we not "see" late in the season while we are trying to win a division. We are in this situation due to a long series of bad coaching and front office decisions, but we are stuck with it I guess.  I hope he comes through, but I have my doubts.

Well, that's where we're at unfortunately. We've seen what the rest of the WR corps outside of Funchess can do and with Samuel going down there's no reason not to give Byrd a shot at a significant role in the offense. It's not like we'll be taking opportunities away from proven performers in order to do so.

And this coming from a guy who has never bought into the Byrd hype. He thing is that we don't have anything to lose by giving him a shot.

All I know is, whoever is out there needs to catch the ball. Cam was off for a good bit, but there were still some balls that should’ve been caught but were dropped. Off top, I know Clay had one and Funchess had 2. Gotta catch the ball.

I hope to see activity from both Byrd and Clay Sunday.

Yep, so much for spreading it around. When you don’t run for 200+, the passing game has to step up. I don’t want to jinx it, but god forbid Funchess gets nicked up. He’s come up gimpy a few times this year including at the end of the Jets game.

If Funchess goes down, we’re in some trouble. Got to get some WR talent in here during the off-season, but right now we gotta roll with what we got

#1wr is Funchess . Byrd to take the spot left by Ginn.  Clay to take CMC spot on punt returns.  CMC to play slot and RB .  Armah will be back to be FB to clear out for CMC, Stewart, or Payne .  Fozzy and Clay for kickoff returns.  Bersin will fill in for relief WR.  We are good to go.
