Wes Fuggin Horton

I don't think there is a bigger situational impact player on this team then Wes.  Seems like he bottles up all of his energy for those few plays he's in and truly makes a big impact.  He flew past that Lineman on the McCown sack/fumble.  He's been a part of quite a few strip sacks over the last few years.  I feel he needs way more snaps then CJ by this point in the year.

Horton definately has improved over the years.

Johnson also cost us a touchdown by losing outside contain and letting McCown out of the pocket to create that huge pass play.

4 Tackles, 12 assisted, 0 sacks. Snaps so far in 2017: 328

 

Horton as a rotational/situational player:

6 tackles, 4 assisted, 3 sacks. Snaps so far in 2017: 205

CJ doesn't suck, but I think it might be time to push him back to second string/rotational player. 

Horton might just be coming into his own like Super Mario did last year. 

Next week is going to be a helluva test on our defensive line... the NO running attack is scary (can't believe that is an actual thing, but there it is) and Drew Brees is just as accurate as ever. Run contain and pass rushing are both going to be at a premium.

Technically ,  They are both  situational players, now days. If you can't see him keeping containment, and his heavy influence in the rush defense, then this conversation is a waste. 

His veteran leadership is also very important to the team. I know how you guys like to downplay that.

I'm editing to add the fact that Charles Johnson is a big reason why our defensive line plays as well as it does.  He deserves the recognition.

On the Wes strip sack he rotated to the inside after seeing Butler blowing up his man to prevent McCown from stepping forward. CJ was just important in that play as the D line did an outstanding job. 

Wes is now coming into his own and I think a transition period of CJ play time to him should steadily increase before playoffs imo.

so stats are the only way to measure impact on the defensive line? yea star sucks too then.

no but guess what, DE's arent there to stop the run like DTs are, there are there to disrupt the QB more so then the interior linemen, are they not?  What else is a DE's job?  You have to trust that either Mario or a rotational Peppers to get to the QB aside from a Horton rotation.

Let me ask you this, do you the CJ is as good as he has been in years past?  His last good year he had 8.5 sacks in 2014....hes had 5 sacks in 3 YEARS.   The homerism is strong if you think he's still got 'it'.

no of course not, but that doesnt mean he doesnt make an impact. anyone can copy and paste stats but you have to at least watch some of the game to understand if players on either line make an impact.

Who's to say I don't watch any of the games?  Give me a break, he isn't a productive DE, to say otherwise is asinine.  Or would you prefer for just one of our DE's to be a threat to the QB, thus teams start to double him and still leave CJ 1 on 1 and still not get any pressure to the QB, making us blitz more and leave our secondary with less coverage just to make up for the lack of pressure so the great QBs can pick us apart in our Zone schemes?

Unless I'm completely wrong on the Zone defense mentality of giving our front 4 more time to attack the QB and get to him with pressure...

Man I gotta start watching some of these football games.
