Panthers wide receivers from a college standpoint

Your entire opening post was whining about the fact none of our receivers had big careers as WRs at the college level.  Hell, the name of the stupid topic is "Panthers Wide Receivers from a College Standpoint".  I provided you with past Panthers draft picks that had huge numbers in college and didn't do squat in the NFL.  Point is maybe getting guys that put up big numbers in college is not necessarily the best way to build a receiver corps.

I agree the Patriots finally got a stud WR in Cooks.  Prior to this year, their rag-tagginess was much worse.

But THE Amendola?  The Rams stud that put up 63-666-3 in 2012 and from 2013-2016 has averaged 42-431-2 for New England?  He is the very definition of "rag-tag". It's generous to call him average.

Out of all the guys you named only Jarrett really produced in college. You named Pilares a kick returner lol

If Amendola is considered rag tag then wtf are our WR? It would be criminal to call them rag tag by your standards.

How's the FA receivers doing for philly? Awesome.

im on the FA bandwagon,...go get a Watkins AND a Jackson,.. hell.

Alshon is averaging about 50yds a game and has the 2nd worst catch rate in the league.

Torrey Smith is averaging less than 25 yds per game and has been held without a catch in 2 games and has 1 catch in 4 others.

I wouldn't say that is "awesome".

I named all of the drafted panthers WRs over the past 10+ years you dimwit.  Most if not all were high-producing WRs in college.  And Pilares was not just a kick returner in college.  His senior year he caught 88 balls for 1306 yards and 15 TDs.  Again, the point is college production does not necessarily translate into NFL production.

Our receivers are rag-tag (other than Olsen and maybe Funchess now that he is getting more targets) and there is nothing wrong with that.  That is why I compared them to New England, who seems to get to the Super Bowl or thereabouts every year.  If you have an elite QB, rag-tag works just fine.  You don't need to draft a WR in the first round if your QB is good enough to elevate everyone around him.  When your QB is a stud, you can use the draft capital in other areas.

I don’t think this organization will ever properly address the position.

With that said, they’ll have ANOTHER golden opportunity this offseason when the 2014 draft class become FA’s (minus 1st rounder who have had their options picked up).

Just give me Dante Pettis in the draft please.

Man at the beginning of the season I really wanted us to go after Allen Robinson.. Great WR on a shitty team with a shitty QB that can't get him the ball. Then he tears his knee up and the Jags are actually good. Now its hard to know what he is worth and how much he wants to part ways with the jags...

Yeah I really wanted to draft him. Jags could tag him coming off an ACL tear, I assume they have the money and it could be the safer route than a long term deal for them.

I doubt the Panthers would go after him anyway. It would put us right back in the same KB/Funch problem we just had.

We desperately need a 2b (I say that because Funchess is a 2a we don’t have a true #1 guy) and there will be options.

Donte Moncrief, Paul Richardson, Davonte Adams, Jarvis Landry all young guys that’ll be FA’s (assuming none get the tag).

I know it’s not the greatest draft class but there’s a few guys who I feel could be a legit 2b for us. But again, we’ve sat here and hoped they’d address this need so many times with no results that I’m done getting my hopes up.

This mouth breathing moron is using a fith round pick out of Hawaii to justify his embarrassing argument. Pilares was a nobody, that wasn’t expected to do nothing in the nfl

You do do know Amendola has more career receiving yards than our entire WR core combined including the practice squad. 7 WR combined vs 1. Like I said if Amendola is ragtag our core is chittag.

Also like I said NE is constantly adding guys Moss, Welker, Lloyd, Johnson even bum ass Lafell. And they also add TE like Bennett and Allen. When was the last time the panthers signed a free agent receiver of even Amendola caliber????

That "Mouth breathing moron" showed you your azz bro. You started a thread about college stats. And got blown out of the water. Just admit it was an ill thought out thread and get on with your life.

I mean admit it. Funch is nothing but a glorified TE, Samuel is just a RB, Pilares is a punt returner, are all just figments of you imagination.

Or my favorite. Amandolla who has more years than our WR corp. combined. Should have more yards. Or Lafell? Yeah, those nasty Pasty's have all the talent. I mean, who can forget Johnson?  LOL

He really showed me, a 5th round pick out of Hawaii, the all world can't miss prospect all draft experts were high on. Had to go back 6 years to prove a point

The last sentence you wrote made no sense what so ever

Um...did you, or did you not, start this thread? College stats? So any Panther draftee with College stats should be involved? Right?

Then it was you, who brought up NE WRs, and Amandola to be precise, to prove some point. There are plenty of those guys who failed, to disprove that point.

Dude, you do realize that the same reason folks think Brady is great, is the same reason folks will think Cam is great? Neither of them had consistently great talent around them.

I am so sorry to say this. But...you may need to rethink your talent evaluation skills.  Because, dude, you really are not as good as you think you are.

Did I or did I not start this thread in 2017? The fact that you have to reach all they way back and grab some 5th round pick as a way of showing that provide Cam with weapons is beyond laughable.

Brady constantly has had better weapons than Cam it’s not even up for debate, especially this season. You know why I made this thread in the first place talking about our current receivers.

Regarding Pilares - I thought your premise was that the Panthers are drafting or signing hybrid guys like Samuel, Shepherd, and Funchess instead of grabbing true WRs in college that put up real WR numbers in college.  I apologize if you had another point buried in there somewhere.  My response was to list ALL of the guys we drafted that were real WRs in college that put up big WR numbers.  The point being, college production at the WR position may not always be the best way to measure how productive an NFL WR will be.

On to your question - When is the last time the Panthers signed someone as good as Amendola?  Finding someone of this caliber, putting up an average of 46-431-2 is a pretty high bar.  I'll have to go all the way back to 2015.

  • In 2015 we signed Ginn.  2015: 44-739-10, 2016: 54-752-4. Numbers better than Amendola.
  • In 2014 we signed Cotchery.  2014: 48-580-1, 2015: 39-485-3. Numbers better than Amendola.
  • In 2013 we signed Ginn.  2013: 36-556-5.  Numbers better than Amendola.
  • In 2016 we felt we didn't need to find a stud like Amendola since we already had Ginn, Olsen, and KB was coming back.
  • In 2017 we already had 2 guys with strong potential to get 1000 yds each (Olsen and KB) and a guy that could probably get 400-500 as the 3rd option (Funchess) so we were not able to snag a stud like Amendola.  But we did manage to add some potential in CMC and Samuel.

As for NE's adds

  • Moss was a great add. But,
  • Welker was an undrafted guy they got from SD.  We've tried lots of undrafted guys - maybe one of ours will turn into a Welker.  Not many undrafted players can be Welker.  Hell Pilares was drafted, had better college numbers, and still couldn't be Welker.
  • Lloyd was at the end of his career and played for NE for 1 year in 2012 (74-911-4) - not a huge upgrade over Ginn.
  • An over-the-hill Ocho Cinco played 1 year in NE catching a whopping 15 balls.
  • And adding our cast off Lafell is your weakest argument ever.

I mean I get that it would be nice to have DeSean Jackson on one side and Julio Jones on the other with Olsen at TE.  But Cam doesn't need it.  He (like Brady) is good enough to elevate the guys we have.

My point is pointing how Cam has one of the most inexperienced WR cores in the nfl, and how if he makes it work it’s crazy. Your drawing your own conclusions

Funny how you completely avoided the tidbit of Amendola has more yards than or entire roster, yet he’s ragtag

Now to decipher your argument. Ginn was a bust in Miami, a 5th string receiver in SF and 4th string receiver in AZ. Nobody outside of Cleveland wanted him free agency.

Cotchery was an old 3rd string WR who literally only got one offer from the Steelers for under 2 million a year.

Meanwhile Amendola was the rams number 1 target, led the nfl in all purpose yards one year, was the most sought after slot receiver in free agency and got a 28 million dollar contract.

How exactly are they the same again? Why exactly are you making excuses for our cheap front office when we haven’t had back to back winning seasons in 23 seasons?????

BTW Lloyd was the rams and broncos leading WR. Welker led the dolphins in receptions before arriving at NE. Do some research before making claims.

Brady doesn’t need it yet the patriots are ten times more active than the panthers in free agency. Hmm.....

I should have just let you do your usual whining and ignored it like always. I don't know why I engaged you.  I will not respond again.

Your obsession with Amendola is disturbing.  He played on some historically bad Rams teams - I'm talking 1-15, 2-14 bad.  He led the league in all purpose yards because he was the kick returner (which was actually a thing back then) and he returned a lot of kicks thanks to the Rams historically bad defense.  Whether he was the number 1 target on a garbage team seems important to you, but I can tell you he did not get a $28 million contract according to Sportrac.

As far as the tidbit about Amendola having more yards than our entire roster, I believe Olsen has nearly as many yards in the last 3 years as Amendola has put up in 8.  And how is that even relevant?

Calling our front office "cheap" is just ignorant.  There is a salary cap that limits how much we can spend in total.  Our front office has allocated much of this limited amount of spending money on QB, TE, and the defensive front 7.  I happen to agree with this strategy.  Why was signing a 5th or 6th receiving option more important than what we brought in this year?  Which of Peppers, Munnerlyn, Adams, Short or Kalil would you have not signed in order to snag this critical reserve?

Finally, the whole 'no back-to-back winning seasons' is so stupid.  No one cares.  This is the greatest period in Panthers history.  We're on track to make the playoffs for the 4th time in 5 years.  Only 1 NFC team has won more games than us in the last 4+ years.  You've got to be a pretty miserable bitch to whine about consecutive winning seasons at this point.

Steve Smith played on bad nfl teams, so what? You automatically discredit him too. And yes Amendola got 5 years 28 million, go do some research

Greg Olsen plays wide receiver now? I could of swore he was pro bowl TIGHT END. Nice try trying manipulate stats to win the argument.

Our front is cheap, even with cap space they have refused to spend money on free agents. And it’s not about signing a 5th or 6th option it was about signing a second legit receiver. I guess you forgot the SB where we had 6 drops, or are you forgetting this season? Sheppard, Samuel and Clay combined have barely done squat.

Who cares about winning seasons? Everyone with half a brain. Maybe you have a loser mentality, and that loser mentality has given our front office a pass for decades.
