Cam Newton Stats - Passing: Dispelling The Myth He’s A “Runningback Playing QB”

For today’s supposed “Michael Vick” - a runningback who throws sometimes - Cam Newton has been doing great so far in his career.

So far, Cam Newton has played in 103 career NFL games. His passing yards have landed him in the top 15 all time for other quarterbacks in the same timespan.

As far as passing yards before quarterbacks pass the age of 29, he beats our Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning, Ben Rothlisberger, Phillip Rivers, and Tom Brady to name a few.

He only needs 176 passing yards to surpass Brett Favre in this category.

Just this past Monday night, he surpassed Archie Manning for career passing yards. He’s on pace to creep into the top 20 or higher by the end of his career.

Reminder: if Cam Newton had 2011’s level of talent around him every year, his passingn stats would be beyond the roof and near unfair. So many drops, incompletions, and bad mistakes by his poor cast, and he’s still putting up monster numbers.

Let’s appreciate the fact that Cam Newton’s our QB.

Only ignorant people say, "Cam is just a running back."

That said, the team needs to seriously find ways to surround Cam with talented receivers and continue to bolster that OLine. I know we are a defense first team, but our defense is so much better when we smother the other teams with too many points.

Only QB Stats I really pay attention to are TD-INTs. Tells you a lot more about the QBs decision making.

Love me some Cam, but its hard to judge this list with all the changes in the rules to help the QB.  Notice most on this list are still active.

I think most of the wide-open passing rules have been in existence for at least 20 years now (happening sometime in the 1990's, I think).

The last pro-QB rule I can remember was the Brady rule protecting a QBs knees, but that doesn't have much to do with passing production.

As a matter of fact, the most recent passing rule I think is anti-passing because I think they changed to again allow a receiver trying to catch a ball on the sideline to be pushed out of bounds for an incompletion.  For a long time there (since those 90's rules changes), the rule was if the receiver is in the air and pushed out of bounds, the reception was assumed.

Cam is a weapon, but I think you run into problems when  you compare him to others using the traditional stats.  His passer rating has never been great; he owes a lot to the fact that he has been healthy and starting for a while.  The fact that he is a running QB is not a negative, but it does hurt his passing in some ways (mechanics-feet) and helps in other ways (less pressure to shadow).

The fact is, Cam has never had good weapons and the OL has always been makeshift at the T spot, and at times, at G.  I do not get that, but it is what it is--protect your investment.

By the way, RT Williams has been quietly having a good year.  Kalil is getting better in pass protection--(run blocking too, to be fair).

Cam has had plenty of weapons. Two 1,000 yard targets and a 1,000 yard back...2015 his weapons were good enough for the Super Bowl. Cam has been given the greatest weapon n of all that QBs like Brees and Brady never had, an elite defense. Can you imagine Brady with an elite defense. Or this QB with that or this or blah blah blah. Not every QB has a complete team and the elite ones don’t need it to win.

The only things Cam has not been given is a oline over the years. If you want to call Cam elite he is going to elevate players like Brady and Brees and make them look like weapons but in reality this forum blows up dumb poo about Cam and no weapons.

Oline a sub par coaching/scheme are the issues with Cam.

Rivers didn’t play for two years and Rodgers didn’t play for three.. age stats are so trivial

Look closer.

He wasn't showing stats by year of age or by number of seasons played.

His stats are showing first 103 games by all QBs.

103 games is 103 games.

I haven't heard the "Cam is a Running Back that plays QB" idea floated seriously in a long time.

People float around "cam is mediocre at best" comment as often as "he didnt jump on the fumble" when making an argument or comment on social media.

I agree mostly,  but Brady had some good defenses in their early dynasty days

    • I didn't say much bigger. Watch the highlights I linked. Bryce doesn't have the arm strength and/or talent to make the vast majority of the throws Mac made in that video.
    • Tetairoa McMillan.   The last 28 1st overall picks were either a QB, DE, or OT. Seeing as I don't think we'd take an OT in the 1st and give up on Ickey as an LT yet and there doesn't seem to be a clear overall #1 type of QB or DE pick this year, it very well could be a non conventional #1 overall this year, at least in regards from the last almost 3 decades of drafts. If we didn't have Horn, I'd be more open to Hunter as a CB at #1, but we have him so another CB wouldn't be how I'd use a #1 pick.  And as much as I love Legette, if we have SB contending aspirations, I don't think Legette is a #1 on a team like that, but he damn sure is an elite #2 on a team like that.  He's more of the Smith/Higgins/Waddle to Brown/Chase/Hill (in terms of role/impact, not style of play of course). T-Mac is going to be the top ranked WR on every team's board in the end.  He is going to be a true outside #1 WR who is viewed as a consensus Top 5 WR in the game by his second contract in the same way guys like Jefferson and Chase have done.  His height combined with his speed, athleticism, and hands are near impossible to find all in one player, there is a reason his generally used comp is Mike Evans (although as he's not as thick, I personally see him more as an AJ Green). Yes, as an Arizona alum I've admitted to having bias towards the player to begin with.  But he's also someone very widely being put into the Top 5 in mock drafts lately and most of them have him as the first non QB offensive player being taken, so it's not really THAT much of a homer pick on my part anyways. If a QB or DE truly separate themselves as being a can't miss prospect come draft day, I'm open to that discussion, but until then, or if it doesn't happen, T-Mac is my pick 100 times out of 100.
