Hurney scouting?

Most teams do fairly well with their first round picks.  For example, only one of Gettleman's 1st round pick's isn't a starter at this point.  If not for us, then for some other team.  But as long as Hurney is not allowed to trade the pick, we should be ok in that regard.

"Most"

What is the percentage of successful first round picks?

I feel that Hurney has turned into the boogeyman for a lot of people.  Like he was the worst GM in the history of the world.  Heck, even though he wasn't great after the first round, Gettleman didn't exactly crush it recently either.   Let's remember, the biggest reason why Hurney is disliked by fans is 100% based on the contracts he doled out.

I have found that Gettlemans first rounders were definitely not as good as Hurney.  I mean, look at the list of first rounders that Hurney drafted (peppers, Gross, Gamble, TD, Deangelo Williams, Beason, J-Stew, Cam Newton, and Luke Kuechly) and compare it to the guys Gettleman drafted (Star, KB, Shaq, Butler, and CMC) and we're talking about Hurney dominating.

After round 1, Edge goes to Gettleman, but people make it out as if he was some all knowing genius when for instance,  we have only 1 player left from our draft in 2014 (trai turner) while we've moved on from 5 players (KB, ealy, Boston, Bene, and Gaffney).  That is actually pretty crappy because depth on our roster should be made up of those guys right now because those are guys that should be in their 4th season and really hitting their strides as NFL players.

I am gonna relax going into the draft and be open minded.  I also think the scouting group we're now affiliated with should help Hurney deeper in the draft, so if he keeps smashing first rounders and then doed even alright from the 2nd round on, we'll be pretty good.

In fairness, we generally had lower picks when Gettleman was drafting, because we had better teams.  I think Hurney had two top 5 picks in his drafting career, where as Gettleman had none.

Fair point, but lets look at picks that just correspond to similar positions.

Gettleman picked #14 Lotulelei, #28 KB , #25 Shaq, #30 Butler, and #8 CMC

In comparable positions

Hurney picked #14 Thomas Davis, #28 Chris Gamble, #25 Jon Beason, #27 Deangelo Williams, and #8 Jordan Gross

I honestly think that list gives an even more definitive slam dunk for Hurney in his first round.

It's not like Gettleman had any significant later round picks.

Funchess, Klein (starter on a division rival now), Williams (current starter at RT), Turner, Short, Mayo (damn decent back-up), and UDFA Norwell as well as many other contributors like CAP, Brown, Bene, etc. who weren't great but still had a role. That's excluding the most recent draft where it's too early to tell, but all signs pointing to Butker being a beast for KC. That's over 4 years.

Hurney had Kalil, LaFell, Norman, Nortman, Hardy*, Johnson, Hangartner, Wharton, Witherspoon, and Captain as the only guys worth a poo over 11 years.

Based on the small sample size, I disagree with you.

Don't really know, probably depends on the definition of successful which can vary.

Edited to add, my number was fairly close if you accept this definition of successful.

I read somewhere last year that the average success rate is about 33% for franchises. They discussed how Jacksonville, Tennessee, Cleveland, and NYJ had brought that number down over the last decade. As for us, I think are 1st round hit rate is jut under 60% for the decade. 6/10 picks turn into quality starters, which isn't bad considering how hard it is to find talent these days.
